Joined Letters
স্কুল “school” and ডাক্তৰ “doctor” each hold a joined shape: স্ক and ক্ত.
How It Works
A consonant letter with no vowel sign carries ô, though the last ô of most words is not said. The sign ্, called হসন্ত, takes that vowel away, so the next consonant can join on.
| Word | Joined shape | Made of | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| স্কুল | স্ক | স + ক | school |
| ডাক্তৰ | ক্ত | ক + ত | doctor |
| ষ্টেচন | ষ্ট | ষ + ট | station |
| বন্ধু | ন্ধ | ন + ধ | friend |
| ছাত্ৰ | ত্ৰ | ত + ৰ | student (boy or man) |
Read a joined shape left to right and say its consonants one after the other with no vowel between them. Some shapes still show both letters. Others merge into a new shape, so you learn them as you meet them.
