চ / ছ
Letters That Sound Like S
চাহ “tea” and ছোৱালী “girl” both begin with the s sound.
How It Works
These two letters are a pair. Both sound like s, and the spelling of each word tells you which one to write.
| Letter | Sound | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| চ | s | চাহ “tea”, চাৰি “four” |
| ছ | s | ছোৱালী “girl”, মাছ “fish” |
Assamese spells many English words that have an s with চ or ছ, such as বাছ “bus” and অফিচ “office”.
The letters স, শ and ষ are a different group. They sound like x.
If you know Hindi or Bengali, you may want to say ch for these letters. In Assamese, say s.
