The -아/어라 ending is a direct and informal way to give a command. It's crucial to use it only in appropriate situations to avoid sounding rude.
Conjugation Rules:
1. If the verb stem's last vowel is ㅏ or ㅗ, you add -아라.
- 가다 (to go) → 가 + 아라 → 가라 (Go!)
- 보다 (to see) → 보 + 아라 → 봐라 (Look!)
2. If the verb stem's last vowel is anything else (ㅓ, ㅜ, ㅣ, ㅡ, etc.), you add -어라.
- 먹다 (to eat) → 먹 + 어라 → 먹어라 (Eat!)
- 읽다 (to read) → 읽 + 어라 → 읽어라 (Read!)
3. For verbs ending in 하다, it becomes 해라.
- 공부하다 (to study) → 공부하 + 여라 → 공부해라 (Study!)
Usage Context:
This form is most commonly used by:
- Parents speaking to their children.
- Very close friends of the same age.
- In certain written contexts like exam instructions or book titles for a general audience.
