-아
Vocative Particle
Attach -아 to a name ending in a consonant to call that person directly, similar to saying "Hey, [Name]!" in English.
यो कसरी काम गर्छ
In Korean, when you call someone's name directly, you often attach a special particle called a vocative particle (호격 조사). The particle you use depends on whether the name ends in a consonant or a vowel.
1. For names ending in a consonant (받침):
You attach -아.
- 민준 → 민준아!
- 수진 → 수진아!
2. For names ending in a vowel:
You attach -야.
- 미나 → 미나야!
- 철수 → 철수야!
Important Social Rule:
Using -아 or -야 implies familiarity and a casual relationship. It is appropriate only when speaking to close friends, siblings, or people who are younger than you. Using it with someone older, a superior at work, or a stranger would be considered rude. In those cases, you would simply say their name followed by their title (e.g., 선생님) or use a politeness marker like -씨. This is a key aspect of honorific forms in Korean.
