yn 'in' + Nasal Mutation
In: Yn + Nasal Mutation
Yn meaning in takes nasal mutation: Caerdydd → yng Nghaerdydd (in Cardiff), Bangor → ym Mangor (in Bangor).
How It Works
How yn and the next word change
- c → ngh: Cymru → yng Nghymru; Caerdydd → yng Nghaerdydd
- g → ng: Gwynedd → yng Ngwynedd
- p → mh: Pwllheli → ym Mhwllheli
- b → m: Bangor → ym Mangor
- t → nh: Tregaron → yn Nhregaron
- d → n: Dinbych → yn Ninbych
Other letters. Nothing else changes, but yn still becomes ym before m: ym Merthyr. Vowels, ll, rh, s and other letters simply follow yn: yn Abertawe, yn Llundain, yn Rhuthun.
With the article. Before y, yr or 'r, yn stays yn and nothing changes: yn y tŷ (in the house), yn yr ardd (in the garden).
With an owner. A noun followed by its owner is definite, so it also takes yn: yng nghanol y dref (in the middle of the town). The fixed phrase ym mhob man means everywhere.
In speech. In quick, relaxed talk some speakers leave the change out or use a soft mutation instead, but the nasal forms are the standard ones, and phrases like yng Nghymru are very common.
Not the other yn. This yn (in) is different from the yn before verb-nouns and the yn before describing words. See Three Kinds of Yn.
