Three Kinds of yn

Level 3

Welsh has three different words spelled yn. Each one does something different to the next word: no change, soft mutation or nasal mutation.

How It Works

1. Yn + verb-noun: no mutation. This yn links bod to an action. After a vowel it shortens to 'n.

  • Dw i'n mynd — I'm going
  • Mae hi'n gweithio — she's working

See bod + yn + verb-noun.

2. Yn + noun or adjective: soft mutation. This yn describes or classifies the subject. It also shortens to 'n. Ll and rh do not change, and neither does braf.

  • Mae hi'n feddyg — she's a doctor (meddyg)
  • Mae'r bwyd yn dda — the food is good (da)
  • Mae'r trên yn llawn — the train is full (no change)

The same yn makes adverbs: yn araf (slowly), yn ofalus (carefully). See predicative yn + soft mutation and yn + adjective as adverb.

3. Yn meaning "in": nasal mutation. This yn becomes yng or ym to match the sound, and it is never shortened to 'n.

  • yng Nghaerdydd — in Cardiff (Caerdydd)
  • ym Mangor — in Bangor
  • yn Llundain — in London (no change)

It is used only with names and definite nouns; otherwise use mewn. See yn + nasal mutation and mewn.

All three together: Mae hi'n gweithio ym Mangor ac mae hi'n hapus — she works in Bangor and she's happy.

Examples (6)

  1. Dw i'n mynd i'r gwaith.

    I'm going to work.

Kind 1: mynd is a verb-noun, so no change.

  2. Mae ei chwaer hi'n feddyg.

    Her sister is a doctor.

Kind 2: meddyg softens to feddyg.

  3. Mae'r cawl yn dda iawn.

    The soup is very good.

Kind 2: da softens to dda.

  4. Mae'r trên yn llawn.

    The train is full.

Kind 2, but ll does not change.

  5. Dw i'n gweithio yng Nghaernarfon.

    I work in Caernarfon.

Kind 1 ('n gweithio) and kind 3 (yng Nghaernarfon).

  6. Mae fy nain yn byw ym Mhwllheli.

    My grandmother lives in Pwllheli.

Kind 1 (yn byw) and kind 3 (ym Mhwllheli). Nain is the Northern word for grandmother.

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting the soft mutation after describing yn.

    Mae Siôn yn meddyg.
    Mae Siôn yn feddyg.

When yn introduces a noun or adjective that describes the subject, it causes soft mutation.

  • Softening a verb-noun after yn.

    Dw i'n fynd.
    Dw i'n mynd.

The yn that links bod to an action never changes the verb-noun.

  • Shortening yn meaning "in".

    Mae hi'n byw'n Nghaerdydd.
    Mae hi'n byw yng Nghaerdydd.

Yn meaning "in" is never shortened to 'n. It becomes yng or ym before some sounds.
