mewn = in a, in an. yn = in the, or in a named place. mewn tŷ (in a house) but yn y tŷ (in the house).

How It Works

Mewn: in a, in an

  • mewn tŷ in a house
  • mewn caffi in a café
  • mewn car in a car
  • mewn swyddfa in an office

There is no mutation after mewn: mewn caffi, mewn tŷ.

Yn: in the, in a named place

  • yn y tŷ in the house
  • yn Abertawe in Swansea
  • yng Nghaerdydd in Cardiff
  • yn swyddfa'r post in the post office (the owner after the noun makes it definite)

Both in one sentence. Mae hi'n gweithio mewn siop yng Nghaernarfon (She works in a shop in Caernarfon).

Time. Mewn is also used before numbers for in (a certain time): mewn pum munud (in five minutes), mewn dau ddiwrnod (in two days).

Going in. i mewn means in or into for movement: Dewch i mewn! (Come in!), Aeth hi i mewn i'r siop (She went into the shop).

Remember that Welsh has no word for a: tŷ already means a house. See No Word for A.

    mewn for a shop, yng for the named town.

    No mutation after mewn: caffi stays caffi.

  4. Bydd y bws yma mewn pum munud.

    The bus will be here in five minutes.

    Mewn is also used before numbers.

  5. Mae'r allweddi yn y car.

    The keys are in the car.

    The car is definite (y car), so use yn, not mewn.

  6. Dewch i mewn!

    Come in!

    i mewn means in or into for movement.

Common Mistakes

  • Using yn for in a.

    Dw i'n byw yn tŷ mawr.
    Dw i'n byw mewn tŷ mawr.

    Yn needs a definite noun after it. Tŷ mawr means a big house, so use mewn.

  • Putting the article after mewn.

    Mae'r gath mewn y gegin.
    Mae'r gath yn y gegin.

    Mewn means in a, so it can't go before y (the). With the article, use yn.

  • Mutating after mewn.

    mewn gaffi
    mewn caffi

    Mewn causes no mutation.
