How It Works

1. Before a noun
Qaysi comes right before the noun, and the noun takes any endings:

  • Qaysi shaharda yashaysiz? (Which city do you live in?)
  • Qaysi tilda gapirasiz? (Which language do you speak?)
  • Qaysi avtobusga chiqaman? (Which bus do I get on?)

2. Which one: qaysi biri
Without a noun, use qaysi biri (which one of them). It takes endings after the possessive: qaysi birini (which one, as an object), qaysi biriga (to which one).

Change the possessive to ask among people: qaysi biringiz (which of you), qaysi birimiz (which of us).

3. Qaysi or qanday?
How and What Kind asks what kind. Qaysi asks which one of a known set.

  • Qanday avtobus? (What kind of bus?)
  • Qaysi avtobus? (Which bus?)

4. No -mi
Like other question words, qaysi does not take -mi: Qaysi biri yaxshi? (Which one is good?)

5. Answering
Point with This One, That Same One or Here It Is, There It Is: — Qaysi biri? — Mana bu. ("Which one?" "This one here.")

6. Qaysi kuni
As a question, Qaysi kuni? asks on which day. In a statement, qaysi kuni means the other day.

Common Mistakes

  • Adding -mi to a which question.

    Qaysi biri yaxshimi?
    Qaysi biri yaxshi?

    Qaysi already makes the question, so -mi is not added.

  • Using qanday when you mean which.

    Qanday avtobus shaharga boradi?
    Qaysi avtobus shaharga boradi?

    Qanday avtobus asks what kind of bus. To ask which of the buses at the stop, use qaysi.
