biz

We

Level 1

Biz means we. The word that describes us, or a present-tense verb, ends in -miz: Biz oʻzbekmiz (We are Uzbek), Biz uyga ketyapmiz (We are going home).

How It Works

One word for every kind of we
Biz covers "you and I" as well as "they and I". Uzbek does not split these the way some languages do.

The ending that goes with biz

  • Noun or adjective sentence: tayyor + -miz → tayyormiz (we are ready). See We Are: -miz.
  • Present-future verb: yasha- + -y + -miz → yashaymiz (we live).
  • Present continuous: ket- + -yap + -miz → ketyapmiz (we are going).

Since the ending carries the person, biz is usually used only for emphasis or contrast. See Dropping the Subject Pronoun.

Case forms and our
Case endings attach directly, with no extra letter: bizga (to us), bizni (us, as an object), bizda (at our place, we have), bizning (our). "Our" is usually shown on the noun itself: uyimiz or bizning uyimiz (our house). See Our: -(i)miz.

Bizlar
You will sometimes hear bizlar in casual speech to stress a group. Biz is already plural, and it is the usual form.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the I-ending -man with biz.

    Biz talabaman.
    Biz talabamiz.

Each pronoun has its own ending. In a noun sentence, biz goes with -miz.

  • Leaving the verb in the I-form after biz.

    Biz uyga ketyapman.
    Biz uyga ketyapmiz.

The verb must end in -miz to agree with biz.
