boʻlib oʻtmoq
To Take Place
boʻlib oʻtmoq means to take place. The event is the subject: Uchrashuv Toshkentda boʻlib oʻtdi (The meeting took place in Tashkent).
How It Works
How it works. Boʻlib oʻtmoq is a verb pair: the -ib form of boʻlmoq + oʻtmoq. Boʻlib never changes, and oʻtmoq takes the tense:
- boʻlib oʻtdi (took place)
- boʻlib oʻtadi (will take place, takes place)
- boʻlib oʻtmoqda (is taking place)
- boʻlib oʻtgan (that took place): kecha boʻlib oʻtgan oʻyin (the match that took place yesterday)
Events. The subject is an event: uchrashuv (meeting), konsert (concert), oʻyin (match), tadbir (event), saylov (election). For a general What happened?, say Nima boʻldi?
Holding an event. Boʻlib oʻtmoq has no object. To say that someone holds an event, use oʻtkazmoq, made from oʻt- with the causative -kaz: Maktab bayram konserti oʻtkazdi (The school held a holiday concert). Its passive oʻtkazildi (was held) means almost the same as boʻlib oʻtdi.
In the news. Event reports often combine it with munosabati bilan (on the occasion of) or -ga bagʻishlangan (dedicated to).
