Sitting There Doing: -(i)b Oʻtirmoq

Level 4

Verb in -(i)b + oʻtirmoq = sitting there doing it, on and on: gazeta oʻqib oʻtiribdi (he is sitting there reading the paper).

How It Works

This is one of the helper verbs that follow a verb in -(i)b. Like turmoq and yotmoq, it comes from a verb of body position.

1. Building the form
Take the verb stem (the dictionary form without -moq) and add -ib after a consonant or -b after a vowel. Then add the helper verb, which carries the tense and the person:

  • oʻqi- → oʻqib oʻtiribdi (he is sitting there reading)
  • kut- → kutib oʻtiribsan (you are sitting there waiting)
  • koʻr- → koʻrib oʻtirdi (he sat watching)

2. The present form
With oʻtirmoq, the -(i)bdi endings make a present tense, not a past: oʻtiribman, oʻtiribsan, oʻtiribdi, oʻtiribmiz, oʻtiribsiz. So oʻqib oʻtiribdi means he is reading now. oʻqib oʻtirdi means he sat reading.

3. Really sitting
Bobom hovlida gazeta oʻqib oʻtiribdi (Grandpa is sitting in the yard reading the paper). Biz choy ichib, gaplashib oʻtirdik (We sat drinking tea and chatting).

4. Drawn-out or idle
In questions and negatives, oʻtirmoq often suggests wasting time: Nega bu yerda kutib oʻtiribsan? (Why are you sitting here waiting?), Men seni kutib oʻtirmayman (I’m not going to sit around waiting for you).

5. Without stopping to
With -masdan, it means without wasting time on something: Oʻylab oʻtirmasdan rozi boʻldi (She agreed without stopping to think).

For a plain is doing now, use -yap: oʻqiyapti. oʻqib oʻtiribdi adds the picture of someone sitting there, taking their time.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the past oʻtirdi for something happening now.

    Bobom hozir gazeta oʻqib oʻtirdi.
    Bobom hozir gazeta oʻqib oʻtiribdi.

Intended: Grandpa is reading the paper now. oʻqib oʻtirdi is past (he sat reading). For now, use oʻqib oʻtiribdi.

  • Adding -b instead of -ib after a consonant.

U kun boʻyi televizor koʻrb oʻtirdi.
U kun boʻyi televizor koʻrib oʻtirdi.

koʻr- ends in a consonant, so it takes -ib: koʻrib.
