-(i)b yotmoq

Lying There Doing: -(i)b Yotmoq

Level 4

Verb in -(i)b + yotmoq = lying there doing it, going on at length: uxlab yotibdi (is sleeping), dam olib yotdim (I lay resting).

How It Works

This is one of the helper verbs that follow a verb in -(i)b. Like oʻtirmoq and turmoq, it comes from a verb of body position.

1. Building the form
Take the verb stem (the dictionary form without -moq) and add -ib after a consonant or -b after a vowel. Then add the helper verb, which carries the tense and the person:

  • uxla- → uxlab yotibdi (is sleeping)
  • davolan- → davolanib yotibdi (is being treated)
  • dam ol- → dam olib yotdim (I lay resting)

2. The present form
With yotmoq, the -(i)bdi endings make a present tense: yotibman, yotibsan, yotibdi, yotibmiz, yotibsiz. Bola uxlab yotibdi means the child is sleeping now. In stories, yotardi sets the scene: Tashqarida qor yogʻib yotardi (Outside, snow kept falling).

3. People lying down
uxlab yotmoq (to be asleep), dam olib yotmoq (to lie resting), kasal boʻlib yotmoq (to be laid up ill), kasalxonada davolanib yotmoq (to be in hospital for treatment).

4. Things that stay and carry on
With things, yotmoq says they sit there over time: Bu kitoblar javonda oʻqilmay yotibdi (These books are sitting on the shelf unread), Hujjatlar chang bosib yotibdi (The papers are gathering dust).

For a plain is happening now, use -yap. -(i)b yotibdi adds the picture of something stretched out over time.

Examples (6)

  1. Jim boʻling, bola uxlab yotibdi.

Be quiet, the child is sleeping.

Word by Word: Quiet be, child sleeping is-lying.

With yotmoq, the -ibdi form means is going on now.

  2. Dadam kasalxonada davolanib yotibdi.

My dad is in hospital being treated.

    Word by Word: Dad-my hospital-in being-treated is-lying.

  3. Kecha kun boʻyi divanda dam olib yotdim.

Yesterday I lay on the sofa resting all day.

Word by Word: Yesterday day length sofa-on rest taking lay-I.

  4. Tashqarida qor yogʻib yotardi.

    Outside, snow kept on falling.

Word by Word: Outside snow falling used-to-lie.

  5. Bu kitoblar javonda oʻqilmay yotibdi.

These books are sitting on the shelf unread.

Word by Word: These books shelf-on not-being-read are-lying.

  6. Ular hali ham uxlab yotishibdi.

    They are still asleep.

Word by Word: They still also sleeping are-lying.

The -(i)sh ending before -ibdi marks a plural subject.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the past yotdi for something happening now.

Jim boʻling, bola hozir uxlab yotdi.
Jim boʻling, bola hozir uxlab yotibdi.

Intended: Be quiet, the child is sleeping now. uxlab yotdi is past (the child lay sleeping). For now, use uxlab yotibdi.

  • Adding -b instead of -ib after a consonant.

    Dadam kasalxonada davolanb yotibdi.
    Dadam kasalxonada davolanib yotibdi.

davolan- ends in a consonant, so it takes -ib: davolanib.
