-(i)b qoʻymoq

Getting It Done: -(i)b Qoʻymoq

Level 4

Verb in -(i)b + qoʻymoq = done, and the result stays: ochib qoʻydim (I opened it and left it open), yozib qoʻying (write it down).

How It Works

This is one of the helper verbs that follow a verb in -(i)b. The helper loses its own meaning and adds a shade to the main verb.

1. Building the form
Take the verb stem (the dictionary form without -moq) and add -ib after a consonant or -b after a vowel. Then add the helper verb, which carries the tense and the person:

  • och- → ochib qoʻydim (I opened it and left it open)
  • yoz- → yozib qoʻying (write it down)
  • tayyorla- → tayyorlab qoʻyaman (I will get it ready)

2. Done and left in place, ready for later
This is the main use, mostly with verbs that act on an object: Onam ovqatni pishirib qoʻydi (Mom has cooked the food, so it is ready), Chiptalarni oldindan olib qoʻydik (We bought the tickets in advance).

3. Done by mistake
With forgetting or letting something slip, qoʻymoq means went and did it. It often comes in the -(i)bdi form when you have only just realized: Uning ismini unutib qoʻyibman! (I’ve gone and forgotten his name!), Sirni bilmasdan aytib qoʻydim (I let the secret slip by accident).

4. Negatives and warnings
The negative goes on qoʻymoq: yozib qoʻymadim (I didn’t write it down). A friendly warning: Unutib qoʻymang! (Don’t go and forget!)

5. qoʻymoq or qolmoq?
qoʻymoq is for things someone does, on purpose or by a slip. -(i)b qolmoq is for changes that simply happen: Derazani ochib qoʻydim (I opened the window) but Deraza ochilib qoldi (The window came open).

Examples (6)

  1. Derazani ochib qoʻydim.

I opened the window and left it open.

Word by Word: Window-(obj.) opening put-I.

  2. Onam ovqatni pishirib qoʻydi.

Mom has cooked the food, so it’s ready.

Word by Word: Mother-my food-(obj.) cooking put.

  3. Telefon raqamimni yozib qoʻying.

    Write down my phone number.

Word by Word: Phone number-my-(obj.) writing put.

Write it so you have it for later.

  4. Chiptalarni oldindan olib qoʻydik.

We bought the tickets in advance.

Word by Word: Tickets-(obj.) beforehand taking put-we.

  5. Voy, uning ismini unutib qoʻyibman!

Oh no, I’ve gone and forgotten his name!

Word by Word: Oh, his name-(obj.) forgetting put-I-(realized).

The -ibman ending shows the speaker has just realized it.

  6. Sirni bilmasdan aytib qoʻydim.

I let the secret slip by accident.

    Word by Word: Secret-(obj.) without-knowing saying put-I.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the bare stem instead of the -(i)b form.

    Derazani och qoʻydim.
    Derazani ochib qoʻydim.

The main verb must be in -(i)b: och- ends in a consonant, so it becomes ochib.

  • Putting the negative on the -(i)b verb.

    Telefon raqamingizni yozmab qoʻydim.
    Telefon raqamingizni yozib qoʻymadim.

The -(i)b verb has no negative form with -ma-. The negative goes on the helper: yozib qoʻymadim (I didn’t write it down).
