-(i)b qolmoq
Ending Up: -(i)b Qolmoq
Verb in -(i)b + qolmoq = ended up that way: uxlab qoldim (I fell asleep), buzilib qoldi (it broke down).
How It Works
This is one of the helper verbs that follow a verb in -(i)b.
1. Building the form
Take the verb stem (the dictionary form without -moq) and add -ib after a consonant or -b after a vowel. Then add the helper verb, which carries the tense and the person:
- uxla- → uxlab qoldim (I fell asleep)
- boʻl- → kasal boʻlib qoldi (he fell ill)
- buzil- → buzilib qoldi (it broke down)
2. An unplanned change of state
Nobody chose it; it just happened: uxlab qolmoq (to fall asleep), kasal boʻlib qolmoq (to fall ill), hayron boʻlib qolmoq (to be taken aback), kechikib qolmoq (to end up late), buzilib qolmoq (to break down).
3. Something suddenly starts
Yoʻlda yomgʻir yogʻib qoldi (It started raining on the way).
4. Getting used to something
-ga oʻrganib qolmoq means to have got used to something: Toshkentga oʻrganib qoldim (I’ve got used to Tashkent).
5. Just realized
With -(i)bdi, the speaker has only now noticed what happened: Uxlab qolibman! (I overslept!). In speech both verbs can take the ending: uxlabman-qolibman.
6. Compared with other helpers
-(i)b qoʻymoq is for things someone does. -(i)b ketmoq stresses a sudden or strong change, and also moving away. With qolmoq the stress is on ending up in a new state. qolib ketmoq joins two helpers: Sumkam avtobusda qolib ketdi (My bag got left behind on the bus).

Common Mistakes
Using the bare stem instead of the -(i)b form.
Televizor oldida uxla qoldim.Televizor oldida uxlab qoldim. The main verb needs -(i)b. uxla- ends in a vowel, so it takes just -b: uxlab.
Putting the person ending on the -(i)b verb instead of qolmoq.
Men uxlabman qoldi.Men uxlab qoldim. The helper verb carries the tense and the person. The -(i)b verb stays as it is: uxlab qoldim.
