میرا / میری / میرے

My and Our Possessions

Level 1

Look at the noun after the possessive. Its gender, number and case choose the form.

How It Works

میرا قلم means my pen: قلم is masculine singular. With feminine چابی, say میری چابی.

For plural جوتے, use میرے جوتے. Before a postposition, میرے جوتوں میں has an oblique plural.

The same speaker can say میرا نام or میری کتاب. Do not choose the ending from your own gender.

Hamarā follows this pattern for our: ہمارا قلم, ہماری چابی and ہمارے جوتے.

Examples (5)

  1. میرا قلم میز پر ہے۔

My pen is on the table.

    Masculine singular قلم takes میرا.

  2. میری چابی میز پر ہے۔

My key is on the table.

    Feminine singular چابی takes میری.

  3. میرے جوتے باہر ہیں۔

    My shoes are outside.

    Masculine plural جوتے takes میرے.

  4. میرے جوتوں میں ریت ہے۔

There is sand in my shoes.

Oblique plural جوتوں still takes میرے.

  5. ہماری کتابیں میز پر ہیں۔

Our books are on the table.

ہماری shows our possession and keeps its feminine form in the plural.

Common Mistakes

  • Choosing from the owner’s gender.

    میرا چابی میز پر ہے۔
    میری چابی میز پر ہے۔

The possessed noun چابی is feminine, so use میری.
