پہلا / دوسرا / تیسرا

Giving an Order or Position

Level 2

Distinguish how many items there are from which one in an order.

How It Works

Learn the ordinal stems as words. The first few are not created by adding one regular ending to the corresponding cardinal number.

Feminine nouns select forms such as پہلی and دوسری. A masculine singular phrase before a postposition uses پہلے, دوسرے or تیسرے.

These forms can describe a floor, page, day or step. The ending depends on the noun and case, not on the numeral’s position in the sentence.

Examples (4)

  1. یہ پہلا صفحہ ہے۔

    This is the first page.

    Masculine صفحہ selects پہلا.

  2. ہم دوسری منزل پر ہیں۔

We are on the second floor.

    Feminine منزل selects دوسری.

  3. وہ تیسرے کمرے میں ہیں۔

They are in the third room.

The masculine room phrase is oblique before میں.

  4. پہلی کھڑکی کھلی ہے۔

    The first window is open.

    Feminine کھڑکی selects پہلی.
