Introducing One Item

Level 1

Decide from context whether the speaker is stressing the number one or simply introducing a noun.

How It Works

میز پر ایک خط ہے introduces a letter on the table. Depending on context, ایک can mean a letter or stress the number one.

میرے پاس ایک چابی ہے says I have one key. ایک stays the same with feminine چابی.

For two, say میز پر دو خط ہیں. Here خط has the same written form in singular and plural, while دو and ہیں show the plural meaning.

Once a letter is known from the conversation, خط میز پر ہے can mean the letter is on the table. Context helps you understand a noun without an article.
