پوچھنا کہ آیا
Embedding a Yes-or-No Question
Ask whether → one possibility, or its opposite.
How It Works
After پوچھنا, کہ آیا can introduce the content of a yes-or-no question. The question concerns whether a whole proposition is true, rather than a missing person, place, or time.
The clause may end with یا نہیں to make the alternatives explicit. آیا in this role is an interrogative particle and is separate from the identical-looking perfective form of آنا.
This phrasing fits careful or formal reporting. Everyday speakers can report such questions with simpler کہ clauses too; do not insert آیا into every ordinary question.

He asked whether the office was open.
آیا introduces the reported yes-or-no question.
- میں نے پوچھا کہ آیا مریم کو پیغام مل گیا ہے یا نہیں۔

یا نہیں makes the two alternatives explicit.

We asked the organizer whether the time could change.
The question asks about a possibility.
- انہوں نے پوچھا کہ آیا سب لوگ تیار ہیں۔
