How It Works

Repeating a numeral distributes the count. In سب کو دو دو سیب دیجیے, each person receives two apples; the total depends on how many people there are.

The distributed group can be stated with کو or ہر, or be clear from context. A repeated ایک can also mean one at a time, depending on the action.

Keep the numeral separate from noun repetition. گھر گھر distributes an activity across houses, whereas دو دو gives an explicit quantity for each recipient or group.

  1. ہر بچے کو دو دو رنگین پنسلیں دیجیے۔

    Give each child two colored pencils.

    Two is the amount for each child.

  2. ہم نے ہر کمرے میں ایک ایک میز رکھی۔

    We put one table in each room.

    The rooms are the units receiving the tables.

  3. سب نے تین تین مثالیں لکھیں۔

    Everyone wrote three examples each.

    The repeated count applies to each person.

  4. ایک ایک کر کے اندر آئیے۔

    Please come inside one at a time.

    The phrase organizes the sequence of entry rather than giving a total.
