Answering a Negative Question Clearly

Level 5

Do not rely only on yes or no → say what is true.

How It Works

A negative question can carry an expectation as well as ask for information. A bare answer particle may leave a learner unsure whether it confirms the wording or corrects the expectation.

In an ordinary full reply, keep the verb and any required negation: میں آؤں گا says that you will come, while میں نہیں آؤں گا says that you will not. Choose the gender and person endings for the person answering.

Urdu speakers can also use pauses, emphasis and particles to correct a prior assumption. Do not turn those conversational choices into a rule that ہاں always means “no” after a negative question. A complete proposition is a useful clear answer.

Examples (4)

  1. آپ کل نہیں آئیں گے؟ — میں کل آؤں گا۔

Aren’t you coming tomorrow? — I will come tomorrow.

The male speaker explicitly confirms that he will come.

  2. آپ کل نہیں آئیں گے؟ — میں کل نہیں آؤں گا۔

Aren’t you coming tomorrow? — I will not come tomorrow.

The explicit negative removes uncertainty about the answer.

  3. مریم نے فارم نہیں بھیجا؟ — اس نے فارم بھیج دیا ہے۔

Hasn’t Maryam sent the form? — She has sent it.

The reply corrects the expectation by stating the completed action.

  4. یہ دکان کھلی نہیں ہے؟ — دکان ابھی بند ہے۔

Isn’t this shop open? — The shop is closed at the moment.

A clear description of the state answers without relying on a bare particle.
