A Resemblance or Softened Description

Level 3

Match سا to the noun being described.

How It Works

چھوٹا سا گھر is often naturally “a little house.” It does not necessarily cast doubt on whether the house really is small.

With an impression such as عجیب سی خوشبو, the particle can soften the description: “a somewhat strange scent.” Do not force one English equivalent into every phrase.

Before a postposition, the masculine singular form can become سے: چھوٹے سے گھر میں. Both the changing adjective and سا follow the noun’s oblique form.

Examples (4)

  1. یہ ایک چھوٹا سا گھر ہے۔

    This is a little house.

سا accompanies a masculine singular noun.

  2. کمرے میں عجیب سی خوشبو ہے۔

There is a somewhat strange scent in the room.

    سی follows feminine خوشبو.

  3. وہ چھوٹے سے گھر میں رہتے ہیں۔

They live in a little house.

The masculine singular phrase is oblique before میں.

  4. مجھے تھوڑی سی جگہ چاہیے۔

    I need a little space.

Both تھوڑی and سی agree with feminine جگہ.
