і/о та і/е
Closed-Syllable Vowel Alternations
In Ukrainian, the vowels о and е often change to і when a syllable becomes 'closed' (ends in a consonant). This process, known as the Alternation of [o], [e] with [i], is a hallmark of the Ukrainian sound system.
How It Works
This alternation occurs because historical short vowels disappeared, causing the preceding syllable to close and the vowel to lengthen and raise to і. Note that і fully palatalizes (softens) preceding dental consonants (д, т, з, с, ц, л, н, дз), but only semi-palatalizes labials (б, п, в, м, ф) and post-alveolars (ж, ч, ш, дж) and the trill (р). It is a key rule to become proficient in for correct spelling and declension.
Where it happens:
- Nouns: In the masculine nominative singular (closed), you see і, but it reverts to о or е in oblique cases where an ending is added (open). Example: стіл (table) vs стола.
- Genitive Plural: Feminine and neuter nouns often have a 'zero ending' in the plural, closing the root syllable. Example: нога (leg) → ніг.
- Word Formation: When a suffix closes a syllable. Example: школа (school) → шкільний.
- Verbs: In the masculine past tense. Example: нести (to carry) → ніс (he carried).
Prothetic 'в': When a word-initial о changes to і in a closed syllable, a в is typically added. Example: вісь (axis) vs осі (axes).
Exceptions:
- Pleophony: Vowel groups -оро-, -оло-, -ере-, and -еле- usually do not alternate (e.g., мороз → морозу). However, some common words like голова → голів, борода → борід, and сторона → сторін are exceptions and do alternate.
- City Names: This rule is vital for major cities: Львів → Львова, Київ → Києва, Харків → Харкова.
- Fleeting vowels: Vowels that drop out entirely (e-o deletion) do not change to і. Example: сон (dream) → сну.
- Loanwords: Recent borrowings usually do not alternate. Example: модем (modem) → модема.

- У вітальні стоїть великий стіл, але біля стола немає стільців.
There is a large table in the living room, but there are no chairs near the table.
Word by Word: In living-room stands big table, but near table there-is-no chairs.
The word 'стіл' (table) has a closed syllable with 'і'. In the genitive 'стола', the syllable becomes open, and the vowel reverts to 'о'.
- Ця школа дуже стара, тому шкільний автобус часто ламається.
This school is very old, so the school bus often breaks down.
Word by Word: This school very old, therefore school bus often breaks-self.
In 'школа', the 'о' is in an open syllable. In the adjective 'шкільний', the suffix closes the syllable, causing 'о' to change to 'і'.
- Він ніс важкий рюкзак, але тепер не несе нічого.
He was carrying a heavy backpack, but now he is carrying nothing.
Word by Word: He carried heavy backpack, but now not carries nothing.
In the masculine past tense 'ніс', the syllable is closed, so we see 'і'. In the present tense 'несе', the syllable is open, so it reverts to 'е'.

Word by Word: At her hurt legs, because she walked many roads.
The word 'доріг' is the genitive plural of 'дорога'. The zero ending closes the syllable, changing 'о' to 'і'.
- Львів — гарне місто; я часто їжджу до Львова.
Lviv is a beautiful city; I often travel to Lviv.
Word by Word: Lviv — beautiful city, I often travel to Lviv.
In the nominative 'Львів', the syllable is closed. In the genitive 'Львова', the syllable is open, so 'і' reverts to 'о'.
- Ця вісь зламалася, хоча інші осі в порядку.
This axis broke, although the other axes are fine.
Word by Word: This axis broke-self, although other axes in order.
When the word-initial 'о' in 'осі' (plural) changes to 'і' in the closed syllable 'вісь' (singular), a prothetic 'в' is added.
Common Mistakes
Applying the rule to modern loanwords.
директірдиректорRecent borrowings like 'директор' or 'модем' do not follow this historical rule. Their vowels remain static.
Forgetting the alternation in the feminine genitive plural.
багато ногбагато нігLearners often forget that the 'zero ending' in the genitive plural closes the syllable, requiring the 'і' change.
Keeping the 'і' in open syllables.
кітакотаDo not keep the 'і' when the syllable opens up. The 'і' must revert to 'о' or 'е' when an ending is added.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand vowel alternations between 'і' and 'о/е', you first need to understand the concept of open and closed syllables in Ukrainian. This phenomenon is most frequently observed during noun declension, so a basic grasp of noun genders and case changes is essential to see why a syllable would shift from closed to open.
