ฤ / ฤๅ / ฦ

The Sanskrit Vowels

Level 6

ฤ has established readings with รึ, ริ, or เรอ in different words. ฤๅ is read รือ in ฤๅษี and รี in ตฤๅ (read ตฺรี). Learn each word’s spelling and reading together; ฦ and ฦๅ belong mainly to historical spelling.

How It Works

1. Learn The Whole Word
The dictionary gives ฤ the readings ริ, รึ, or เรอ in different words. ฤดู begins with รึ, อังกฤษ has the established ending -กริด, and ฤกษ์ is written with the reading เริก. พฤศจิกายน contains the component พฤศจิก, which the dictionary reads พฺรึดสะจิก. Learn the complete month name rather than assigning one vowel after every consonant.

2. Recognize ฤๅ
The dictionary gives both รือ and รี: ฤๅษี is read รือสี, while ตฤๅ is read ตฺรี. Keep the special mark ๅ distinct from ordinary า. As a separate word, ฤๅ also has dictionary senses such as “or” and is marked as occurring mostly in verse.

3. Read The Whole Syllable
A letter’s vowel reading is only part of a syllable’s written pronunciation. Check the complete spelling and its established reading before applying tone rules.

4. Recognize ฦ And ฦๅ
The dictionary describes these as separate written forms for ลึ and ลือ, following Sanskrit spelling practice. The spelling exercise asks for น้ำลึก. Comparing that exercise with historical spellings does not make a historical quotation incorrect.

5. Compare Other Special Spellings
Compare รร and Pali and Sanskrit compounds through their own complete examples. The presence of ฤ alone does not establish the origin or pronunciation of every complete word.

Examples (5)

  1. ประเทศไทยมีสามฤดู

    Thailand has three seasons.

Word by Word: country Thai have three season

ฤดู begins with the syllable read รึ; the sentence says Thailand has three seasons.

  2. ฉันชอบเรียนภาษาอังกฤษ

    I like studying English.

Word by Word: I like study language English

Learn อังกฤษ with its established spelling and reading อัง-กริด. This one word does not establish a universal vowel rule for every following consonant.

  3. พรุ่งนี้เป็นฤกษ์ดีสำหรับการแต่งงาน

Tomorrow is an auspicious time for a wedding.

Word by Word: tomorrow be auspicious-time good for the wedding

ฤกษ์ uses the long vowel associated with เรอ; the whole word includes a final /k/ sound.

  4. เดือนพฤศจิกายนอากาศเริ่มเย็น

In November, the weather starts to get cool.

Word by Word: month November weather start cool

The first syllable of พฤศจิกายน is read พรึด. Learn the complete month name, including its syllable boundaries.

  5. มีพระฤๅษีอยู่ในป่า

There is an ascetic in the forest.

Word by Word: have ascetic located in forest

ฤๅษี starts with รือ, using the long-form spelling ฤๅ.

Common Mistakes

  • Keep The Standard Spelling อังกฤษ

    เขาพูดภาษาอังกริด
    เขาพูดภาษาอังกฤษ

The task asks for the current standard word for English. เขาพูดภาษาอังกฤษ retains that spelling. อังกริด substitutes a phonetic-looking spelling that does not reproduce it.

  • Use น้ำลึก For This Current Spelling Task

    น้ำฦกมาก
    น้ำลึกมาก

น้ำลึก is the ordinary current spelling in this task. น้ำฦก uses a historical letter instead. This comparison does not forbid displaying that letter in a historical quotation or a lesson about older spelling.
