รร
The ร หัน Spelling
รร, called รหัน, spells a short a in กรรม, read กำ, and an a-plus-n ending in กรรไกร, read กัน-ไกร. Learn the complete word and its syllables.
How It Works
A Short a With a Final Consonant:
In the school written-reading reference, กรรม is read กำ. รร supplies the short a with final ม. วรรค is read วัก, with the final stop.
An a-Plus-n Reading:
กรรไกร is read กัน-ไกร in that reference. Its first syllable ends in n. Compare these complete words rather than reading every next letter after รร as a final consonant.
Longer and Alternative Readings:
The reference gives ภรรยา both พัน-ยา and พัน-ระ-ยา. It gives บรรพชา both บัน-พะ-ชา and บับ-พะ-ชา. That is why a rule saying every บรร- must always be ban would be wrong. Learn the accepted written readings of each whole word.
Read the Displayed Sentences:
The examples also contain สวรรค์, บรรทุก, ธรรมดา, and บรรทัด. Keep their complete spellings intact. Compare The Silent Marker and Live and Dead Syllables using the complete word or syllable. A loanword’s exact reading is not settled by the label Pali and Sanskrit Compound or Khmer-Derived Form alone.
Abbreviations:
รร. or ร.ร. can be an abbreviation in its own context. That is a different use of the letters from รหัน in a complete word. The written readings here do not certify a recording or the learner’s pronunciation.
Compare the Written Readings:
For กรรม, choose the reading kam, as in กำ. Do not add an r sound to make kram or karm. This comparison applies to this complete word, not every word containing รร.
For วรรค, choose the high-tone reading /wák/, rather than a mid or rising tone. Read the whole syllable: initial ว, a short vowel, and final ค pronounced /k/. Do not treat รร alone as a live syllable. This is a written reading comparison, not a check of recorded pronunciation.

How It Connects
Learn This First
The ร หัน (รร) is a special orthographic rule in Thai where a double 'ร' represents a short 'a' sound, often followed by an 'n' sound if no final consonant is present. To become confident with this, learners must already be comfortable with basic Thai script, the distinction between short and long vowels, and how syllables are structured with final consonants.
- Thai Script Basics
Understanding the basic Thai alphabet and how consonants and vowels combine is essential before learning special spelling rules like รร.
Foundations - Short And Long Vowels
The รร spelling functions as a specific short vowel sound, so the concept of vowel length is a necessary foundation.
Foundations - Live And Dead Syllables
The รร spelling often acts as a final 'n' sound (making it a live syllable), so understanding syllable endings is helpful for correct pronunciation.
