ผู้ + Verb
People Defined by a Role
The examples name people through complete expressions: ผู้จัดการ is a manager, ผู้สมัคร an applicant, ผู้ป่วย a patient, and ผู้โดยสาร a passenger.
How It Works
1. Complete Person Expressions
ผู้จัดการ means “manager”, ผู้สมัคร means “applicant”, ผู้ป่วย means “patient”, and ผู้โดยสาร means “passenger”. The following material identifies a role, action, or condition. These examples do not require that the person be a professional expert.
2. A Person Who...
ผู้ที่ introduces a person or people described by a following clause. In ผู้ที่ต้องการสมัคร, it identifies “the person who wants to apply”. Compare the linked relative marker ที่; the complete clause determines the description and number, rather than an automatic formal-only meaning.
3. Compare Complete Expressions
คนขับรถ and ผู้ขับขี่ refer to a driver through different expressions. Do not assume every คน construction and ผู้ construction can be exchanged word for word, or that every conversation must use only one. The related นัก construction includes words such as นักเรียน (student) and นักเขียน (writer); it does not guarantee expertise or an established profession.
4. Keep Different Uses Separate
This lesson teaches person expressions, not a universal rule about every occurrence of ผู้. For the male-cat expression in the exercise, use แมวตัวผู้. For the requested nationality expression “a Thai person”, use คนไทย. These specific expressions do not license mechanically replacing คน or ตัวผู้ with ผู้.
Examples (4)
- ผู้จัดการกำลังประชุมอยู่
The manager is currently in a meeting.
Word by Word: Person-manage [ongoing] meeting [ongoing]
ผู้จัดการ identifies the manager. กำลัง and อยู่ frame the meeting as ongoing.
- ผู้สมัครต้องยื่นเอกสารภายในวันศุกร์
Applicants must submit documents by Friday.
Word by Word: Person-apply must submit document within day Friday
ผู้สมัคร identifies applicants. ต้อง states the requirement to submit documents by the stated deadline; it is not a formal-only word.
- โรงพยาบาลให้การรักษาผู้ป่วยฟรี
The hospital provides treatment to patients for free.
Word by Word: Hospital give [nominalizer] treat person-ill free
ผู้ป่วย means patients, with ป่วย expressing being ill. The sentence says treatment is free; this grammar example does not establish a real hospital’s policy.
- ผู้โดยสารโปรดทราบ
Passengers, please take note.
Word by Word: Person-ride-along please know
ผู้โดยสาร addresses passengers, and โปรดทราบ asks them to take note. The phrase alone does not supply the following announcement.
Common Mistakes
Not following the requested คนกินข้าว construction.
ผู้กินข้าวคือใครคนกินข้าวคือใครThis task specifically asks for คนกินข้าวคือใคร, using คน to identify the person eating. ผู้กินข้าวคือใคร uses a different person expression. The exercise does not declare every use of ผู้ in conversation ungrammatical or inappropriate.
Shortening the requested male-cat expression.
แมวผู้แมวตัวผู้For the complete expression “male cat” requested here, use แมวตัวผู้. แมวผู้ omits ตัว from that expression. Keep this animal-sex expression separate from the person-role examples; this task does not define every other use of ผู้.
Replacing คน in the requested คนไทย nationality expression.
ผู้ไทยคนไทยThe exercise requests คนไทย, “a Thai person”, using คน. ผู้ไทย is not the requested expression. Do not derive nationality terms by freely replacing คน with ผู้; this is a comparison of the specified expression, not a claim about every proper name or ethnic-group label.
How It Connects
Learn This First
The pattern 'ผู้ + Verb' is a formal way to create an agent noun (the person who performs an action). To understand this, learners need to be comfortable identifying verbs in a sentence and understand the concept of using prefixes to change a word's grammatical category from a verb to a noun.
