Merged Compounds
สนธิ (Sondhi) is the process of 'euphonic blending' where the end of one word and the start of another melt together to form a new word. In traditional Thai grammar, this category describes Pali and Sanskrit compounds. Their resulting vocabulary is not limited to formal contexts.
How It Works
1. Read Changes At A Word Boundary
สนธิ is taught here as compounding with changes where Pali or Sanskrit components meet. Compare สมาส. Learn the complete established words and the particular analysis shown for each one.
2. Compare Three Categories
- Vowel Sandhi: The DLTV lesson shows ธนู + อาคม becoming ธันวาคม. Its surrounding examples also show that อิ or อี may be replaced by ย in one compound and omitted in another. One example does not give a rule for joining any two words.
- Consonant Sandhi: The lesson labels มนัส + ภาพ → มโนภาพ as อาเสโท (Adesa): the final consonant is replaced by โอ. This is the method used in the explanation of มโนภาพ below.
- Nikkhahit Sandhi: With นิคหิต before a vowel, the lesson shows สํ + อาคม → สมาคม, with ม. Before a consonant in one of the five traditional consonant classes, it gives that class's final nasal: ง, ญ, ณ, น, or ม.
3. Follow The Named Analysis
Teaching references can present a compound through different starting forms. For นิรภัย, the displayed example uses นิส + ภัย with replacement of ส by ร; the DLTV lesson instead starts from นิรส + ภัย and labels the deletion โลโป (Lopa). Keep those analyses distinct. The result word alone does not select one starting form or prove an eight-operation taxonomy.
Examples (5)
- ประชาภิวัฒน์ (ประชา + อภิวัฒน์)
People + development/transformation → development/transformation of the people (meaning depends on context).
The displayed decomposition joins ประชา and อภิวัฒน์ at their vowel boundary. Read this as the particular compound analysis shown here, rather than a rule for freely joining any two words.
- มนส + ภาพ = มโนภาพ
Mind + Image = Imagination
An example of Consonant Sandhi where the final '-s' (ส) of the root word transforms into the vowel '-o' (โ-) through the Adesa method.
- สํ + อาคม = สมาคม
Together + Coming = Association
Nikkhahit Sandhi where the root สํ (using the นิคหิต dot) transforms into a nasal 'm' (ม) before a vowel.
- นิส + ภัย = นิรภัย
Without + Danger = Safe/Secure
The displayed analysis starts with นิส + ภัย and replaces ส with ร to give นิรภัย. An alternative teaching analysis starts with นิรส + ภัย and deletes ส. These are different analyses of the same result word.
- มหา + อรรณพ = มหรรณพ
Great + Ocean = Great Ocean
The displayed compound joins มหา and อรรณพ as มหรรณพ. Compare the complete spelling; this explanation does not derive the word’s pronunciation from one vowel-deletion rule.
How It Connects
Learn This First
สนธิ (Merged Compounds) is an advanced morphological process in Thai, primarily affecting words of Pali and Sanskrit origin. To understand it, you must first be familiar with basic Thai compounding (สมาส), as well as the fundamental rules of vowel placement and length, as these determine how the two words phonetically and orthographically fuse into one.
- Pali And Sanskrit Compounds
สนธิ is a specific, more complex type of Thai compound word formation (สมาส) where the joining vowels fuse together rather than simply sitting side-by-side.
Level 6 - Short And Long Vowels
Understanding how short and long vowels interact is essential for recognizing how vowels merge and change length during the fusion process in สนธิ.
