อย่าง introduces the manner of an action in these examples: ทำงานอย่างรอบคอบ means work carefully.
How It Works
Show How An Action Happens
In เขาทำงานอย่างรอบคอบ, อย่างรอบคอบ describes how he works: carefully. Notice that รอบคอบ keeps its written form in this phrase.
Read The Other Manner Phrases
อย่างระมัดระวัง describes careful driving. อย่างรวดเร็ว describes rapid development. In เขายิ้มอย่างมีความสุข, the phrase after อย่าง is มีความสุข, having happiness, giving the reading smiled happily.

The action phrase comes before the อย่าง phrase in these sentences. The running exercise practises เขาวิ่งอย่างรวดเร็ว. Compare each complete phrase rather than assuming that any descriptive word can be inserted into every manner construction.
Compare Whole Expressions
Thai also has manner expressions such as ช้าๆ and phrases with แบบ, โดย, or ด้วยความ. Their wording and meaning must be read in context; they are not automatic replacements based only on how formal a sentence sounds.
