แทน
Instead of
The four examples use แทน for going in someone’s place, attending a meeting for someone, choosing tea instead of coffee, and working in another person’s place. Read the complete phrase to identify the replacement.
How It Works
1. A Named Person
เจนจะเข้าประชุมแทนผม says that Jane will attend the meeting in the speaker’s place. วันนี้ผมทำงานแทนคุณพ่อ describes working in the father’s place; the translation interprets the father as the speaker’s father, although no possessive is written.
2. A Replacement Understood from Context
In ฉันไปไม่ได้ สามีฉันก็เลยไปแทน, the speaker says they cannot go and presents the husband’s going as the consequence. แทน follows ไป in this example, and the speaker is the person replaced. ผมจะไปแทน can likewise mean “I will go in someone’s place,” with the person understood from context. It does not mean merely “I will just go.” The past reading of the first example comes from the displayed translation context, not obligatory tense marking in แทน.
3. Another Choice
ไม่มีกาแฟ เอาชาแทนได้ไหม mentions the absence of coffee and asks about taking tea instead. The speaker or beneficiary is understood from context. NIU’s selected แทน entry includes substitution of both people and things; it does not establish frequency or one universal word-order rule.
4. The Requested Contrast Pattern
The second exercise requests the complete แทนที่จะ construction: แทนที่จะกินข้าว เขาจะกินขนม. NIU gives this construction for an “instead of” action contrast. The exercise asks for this particular pattern; it is not a ban on every other phrase or clause containing แทน.
Examples (4)
- ฉันไปไม่ได้ สามีฉันก็เลยไปแทน
I couldn't go, so my husband went instead.
Word by Word: I | go | cannot; my husband | so | go | in my place
The speaker presents the husband’s going as the consequence of being unable to go. แทน follows ไป here, with the speaker understood as the person replaced. The displayed English uses a past context; แทน itself does not mark past tense.
- เจนจะเข้าประชุมแทนผม
Jane will attend the meeting instead of me.
Word by Word: Jane | will attend a meeting | in place of me
ผม names the person Jane is to replace at the meeting. The clause presents this attendance as projected, rather than asserting that it has already happened.
- ไม่มีกาแฟ เอาชาแทนได้ไหม
There’s no coffee; can [I] have tea instead?
Word by Word: there is no coffee; take tea | instead | can [question]?
Coffee is the unavailable choice, and tea is proposed as its replacement. The first-person subject in the translation is supplied by the displayed request context.
- วันนี้ผมทำงานแทนคุณพ่อ
Today I am working in place of [my] father.
Word by Word: today | I | work | in place of father
The clause describes working in the father’s place. The displayed translation infers the speaker’s father from context; the native phrase คุณพ่อ does not contain an explicit possessive or name a work shift.
Common Mistakes
Not reproducing the requested going-in-someone’s-place pattern ผมจะไปแทน.
ผมจะแทนไปผมจะไปแทนThis task requests ผมจะไปแทน, with แทน after ไป and the replaced person understood. ผมจะแทนไป does not reproduce that sequence. This exercise does not establish that แทน can never precede a verb in any other construction.
Not reproducing the requested complete แทนที่จะ action contrast.
แทนกินข้าว เขาจะกินขนมแทนที่จะกินข้าว เขาจะกินขนมThis exercise requests แทนที่จะ in แทนที่จะกินข้าว เขาจะกินขนม. แทนกินข้าว เขาจะกินขนม omits part of that requested construction. Compare the complete phrases in context rather than declaring every other verb-containing use of แทน invalid.
