กระผม

I — Formal Male-Speaker Usage

Level 5

กระผม refers to the speaker. Here it appears in a request to report, thanks on behalf of a company, a request to a teacher, and a report that an instruction has been completed.

How It Works

Follow The Speaker
In all four examples, กระผม identifies the person making the request, giving thanks, or reporting completion. The Thai historical-pronoun research classifies it with male-speaker forms and describes increased politeness. That conventional classification is not a rule that every real speaker must use a particular pronoun.

Read The Whole Request
ขออนุญาตรายงานตัว requests permission to report. ในนามของบริษัท means on behalf of the company. คุณครู identifies the teacher being addressed. The final example reports completion of an instruction.

Keep The Context
The Royal Society explains that pronoun choice depends on the speaker, listener, relationship and situation. A pronoun alone does not establish the listener’s gender, office or rank. These examples do not license adding sir, commander or general to their translations.

Distinguish The Written Forms
กระผม names the speaker in these sentences. The acknowledgement shown in the exercise is ครับผม. Read the full forms; this lesson makes no claim about how often a particular sound is shortened in speech.

Examples (4)

  1. กระผมขออนุญาตรายงานตัวครับ

I respectfully request permission to report.

Word by Word: I | request permission | report oneself | polite particle

กระผม identifies the speaker, and ขออนุญาตรายงานตัว asks permission to report. ครับ is a polite ending; it does not specify a commander or a male listener.

  2. กระผมในนามของบริษัท ขอขอบพระคุณท่านเป็นอย่างสูง

On behalf of the company, I would like to thank you deeply.

Word by Word: I | on behalf of | company | would like to thank you [respectful] | very much

The speaker gives thanks on behalf of a company. ท่าน respectfully addresses the listener without naming a job or rank.

  3. คุณครูครับ กระผมขอส่งการบ้านพรุ่งนี้ได้ไหมครับ

Teacher, may I submit the homework tomorrow?

Word by Word: teacher | polite particle | I | request | submit | homework | tomorrow | may [question] | polite particle

The speaker asks the teacher for permission to submit homework tomorrow. คุณครู does not specify whether the teacher is a man or a woman.

  4. สิ่งที่ท่านสั่งมา กระผมได้ดำเนินการเรียบร้อยแล้วครับ

I have completed what you instructed.

Word by Word: thing | that | you [respectful] | instructed | I | carried out | completed | already | polite particle

This reports completion of an instruction. ท่าน refers respectfully to the listener; the sentence does not name the listener’s position.

Common Mistakes

  • Choosing The Pronoun For An Acknowledgement

    กระผม!
    ครับผม!

For this task, the speaker is acknowledging a request, not naming themself. Choose the provided acknowledgement ครับผม!, rather than the pronoun กระผม! No listener rank is specified.
