Use เกี่ยวกับ to mean “about” or “concerning” a topic. Its meaning also includes involvement; it does not mean “approximately” before the number in the meeting-time task.

How It Works

เกี่ยวกับ means “about” or “concerning”; it can also describe being involved with something. This lesson focuses on naming a topic.

1. Naming The Topic
In the book example, หนังสือเกี่ยวกับประวัติศาสตร์ไทย means a book about Thai history. In the conversation example, เกี่ยวกับปัญหานี้ names the problem being discussed. In the article example, เกี่ยวกับวิธีการทำอาหารไทย tells us what the article is about.

2. Naming An Activity
การ can form a noun naming an action. The practice phrase เกี่ยวกับการเรียนภาษาไทย names learning Thai as the topic. Learn that complete phrase; it does not create a rule that every expression after เกี่ยวกับ must begin with การ.

3. “About” With A Number
For the intended approximate meeting time in the practice task, use เจอกันประมาณห้าโมง, “Meet at about five.” ประมาณ supplies the approximation. เกี่ยวกับ does not supply that numerical meaning.

4. Thinking About Someone
The last task intends “I miss you,” so its correction uses คิดถึง. Thinking about someone as a topic and missing them are different readings; the task does not require a formal or analytical setting for thinking about someone.

    เกี่ยวกับ can be used directly after a subject to define what that subject is 'about'.

Common Mistakes

  • Using เกี่ยวกับ for numerical approximations.

    เจอกันเกี่ยวกับห้าโมง
    เจอกันประมาณห้าโมง

    For the intended approximate meeting time, ประมาณห้าโมง means “about five.” เกี่ยวกับ expresses a topic or involvement, so it does not express that approximation in this sentence.

  • Leaving the activity unnamed in the intended noun phrase about learning Thai.

    เกี่ยวกับการเรียนภาษาไทย

    For the noun phrase about learning Thai, การเรียนภาษาไทย names the activity clearly. Use เกี่ยวกับการเรียนภาษาไทย for that meaning. This example does not mean that every topic or clause after เกี่ยวกับ must begin with การ.

  • Using 'think about' when you mean 'miss someone'.

    ฉันคิดเกี่ยวกับคุณ
    ฉันคิดถึงคุณ

    For the intended meaning of missing someone, use คิดถึง. คิดเกี่ยวกับ makes the person a topic of thought and does not by itself mean miss; it need not describe formal research or analysis.
