เครื่อง
Classifier for Machines
Use เครื่อง (khrueang) to count or specify electronic gadgets and mechanical devices like phones, computers, and washing machines.
How It Works
Use เครื่อง with machines and devices such as phones, computers, televisions, and washing machines.
1. Counting:
The pattern shown here is [Noun] + [Number] + เครื่อง.
Example: โทรศัพท์ 2 เครื่อง (Two phones).
2. Identifying a device:
Place เครื่อง before a word such as 'this' or 'that'.
Example: คอมพิวเตอร์เครื่องนี้ (This computer).
3. Choosing a classifier:
Learn classifiers with the nouns they describe. For เครื่อง, learn the noun-specific pattern. ตัว is another classifier with its own uses. Use เครื่อง for the device-counting patterns in this lesson; do not choose a classifier just by the item's price or by whether it has an engine.
Examples (4)
- บ้านฉันมีโทรทัศน์สองเครื่อง
My house has two televisions.
Word by Word: House I have television two machine
Here, เครื่อง follows the number 'two' to count the televisions.
- โทรศัพท์เครื่องนี้ราคาเท่าไหร่
How much is this phone?
Word by Word: Telephone machine this price how-much
When pointing to a specific item ('this phone'), the classifier เครื่อง is placed between the noun and the word 'this' (นี้).
- เขาซื้อเครื่องซักผ้าใหม่หนึ่งเครื่อง
He bought one new washing machine.
Word by Word: He buy machine-wash-clothes new one machine
The word for washing machine starts with 'khrueang' (เครื่องซักผ้า), but the final 'khrueang' has a separate job as the classifier in this counting phrase.
- คอมพิวเตอร์เครื่องนั้นเสีย
That computer is broken.
Word by Word: Computer machine that broken
Using เครื่อง with นั้น (that) to specify which computer is being discussed.
Common Mistakes
Confusing 'khrueang' (machine) with 'rueang' (story/topic).
หนังสองเครื่องหนังสองเรื่องเครื่อง is used as the machine classifier here, while เรื่อง is used for a story, film, or topic. The corrected exercise uses the classifier for a film.
Using a general classifier instead of the device classifier taught here.
ไอโฟนสามอันไอโฟนสามเครื่องFor the iPhone in this exercise, use 'khrueang' rather than the general อัน. Classifier choice follows the noun and context, not the price of the device or a judgment about the speaker.
Leaving out the classifier in this counting pattern.
โน้ตบุ๊กสองโน้ตบุ๊กสองเครื่องIn the counting pattern shown here, place the classifier after the number. The corrected example completes the noun + number + classifier phrase.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To use the classifier 'เครื่อง' (khrueang), you first need to understand the general role of classifiers in Thai grammar. You must also be familiar with the word order for counting nouns and using demonstratives (like 'this' or 'that') with classifiers.
