ยอมให้

Allow

Level 4

Subject + ยอมให้ + Person + Action
The displayed examples describe allowing someone to go out, enter, buy a game, or act in a particular way.

How It Works

1. Read Consent in Context
The dictionary records ยอม as allowing, agreeing, or complying, and ยอมให้ as yielding or allowing an action. In the displayed family sentences, a parent allows a speaker to go out or buy a game. Do not add a prior argument, an official position, or a guaranteed favour solely from this phrase.

2. Follow the Displayed Construction
In พ่อยอมให้ฉันไปเที่ยวกับเพื่อน, พ่อ is the permitting person, ฉัน is the person permitted, and ไปเที่ยวกับเพื่อน is the action. The linked ให้ construction also appears in the university lesson's ฉันให้ลูกไป, letting a child go. Permitting an action does not by itself assert that the action happened.

3. Distinguish Negation Scope
For the intended refusal to allow, reproduce เขาไม่ยอมให้ฉันไป with ไม่ before ยอม. The other displayed sequence, เขายอมไม่ให้ฉันไป, puts negation in a different position and can describe agreeing not to allow the action. It does not reproduce the requested refusal construction.

4. Practise the Requested Permission Expression
The family request exercise asks for ยอมให้. Its อนุญาตให้ alternative is a meaningful permission request, not an inherently ungrammatical sentence or a word banned within families. Compare the requested wording and the intended meaning rather than treating social relationships as fixed grammar rules.

Examples (4)

  1. พ่อยอมให้ฉันไปเที่ยวกับเพื่อน

Dad allows me to go out with friends.

    Word by Word: Dad | consent | let | I | go | travel | with | friend

Dad consents to the outing. Earlier hesitation is possible context, not separately stated by the sentence.

  2. เขาไม่ยอมให้ใครเข้ามาในบ้าน

He refuses to let anyone come into the house.

Word by Word: He | not | consent | let | anyone | enter | come | in | house

ไม่ยอมให้ expresses refusal to allow entry in this sentence.

  3. แม่ยอมให้ผมซื้อเกมใหม่

Mom allows me to buy a new game.

    Word by Word: Mom | consent | let | I [ผม] | buy | game | new

Mom consents to buying a new game; the sentence does not state how often the speaker asked or whether persuasion was needed.

  4. ทำไมคุณถึงยอมให้เขาทำแบบนั้น

Why do you let him do that?

Word by Word: Why | you | [linking word] | consent | let | him | do | like | that

This question asks why the person consented to or tolerated the other person's behavior.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a different permission expression in an exercise requesting ยอมให้.

    คุณแม่ครับ อนุญาตให้ผมไปดูหนังได้ไหมครับ
    แม่ครับ ยอมให้ผมไปดูหนังหน่อยนะ

This exercise requests แม่ครับ ยอมให้ผมไปดูหนังหน่อยนะ. คุณแม่ครับ อนุญาตให้ผมไปดูหนังได้ไหมครับ is also a meaningful request for permission, but it does not practise the requested ยอมให้ wording. Do not label อนุญาตให้ universally wrong in a family conversation.

  • Misplacing the negative particle 'ไม่'.

    เขายอมไม่ให้ฉันไป
    เขาไม่ยอมให้ฉันไป

The requested meaning is refusing to allow the speaker to go: เขาไม่ยอมให้ฉันไป. In เขายอมไม่ให้ฉันไป, the different placement can describe agreeing not to let the speaker go. Preserve the intended negation scope; this is not a claim that the second sequence is always ungrammatical.

Learn This First

To understand 'ยอมให้' (Allow), you first need to understand the causative use of 'ให้' which functions as 'let' or 'make'. Since 'ยอม' means 'to give in' or 'yield', combining them creates the specific meaning of 'agreeing to let' someone do something. You also need to be comfortable with basic serial verb constructions where verbs follow one another in a sentence.
