i stället för att
Instead of -ing
Use i stället för att + verb (infinitive) to say 'instead of doing something'.
How It Works
The phrase i stället för att introduces an alternative and can be analyzed here as i stället för followed by an att-infinitive or an att-clause. It literally means 'in the place of to...' and corresponds to the English 'instead of -ing'.
Structure:
The most common structure is:
- Main Clause + i stället för att + Infinitive Verb Phrase
For example: Jag cyklar till jobbet i stället för att ta bussen. (I bike to work instead of taking the bus).
Here, 'taking the bus' is the action that is not done, and 'biking to work' is the action that is done instead.
Important Note on att:
The word att is crucial when you are contrasting two verbs (actions). If you are contrasting two nouns, you just use i stället för without att.
- Verbs: Han lagar mat i stället för att beställa pizza. (He cooks food instead of ordering pizza.)
- Nouns: Han beställer te i stället för kaffe. (He orders tea instead of coffee.)
Word Order:
If you begin a sentence with the i stället för att phrase, it acts as the first element of the sentence. This means the main clause that follows must use the V2 (verb-second) word order.
I stället för att klaga, försökte han hitta en lösning. (Instead of complaining, he tried to find a solution.)
Notice the verb försökte comes before the subject han.
A Finite Clause
I stället för att jag skulle skriva, ringde hon (Instead of me writing, she called) has its own subject jag and finite skulle. In the more compact infinitive pattern the understood subject is normally shared with the main clause. The phrase can also be written istället för att.
Examples (5)
- Jag bestämde mig för att stanna hemma i stället för att gå på festen.
I decided to stay home instead of going to the party.
Word by Word: I decided me for to stay home in place of to go to the-party.
- Han läser en bok i stället för att titta på TV.
He is reading a book instead of watching TV.
Word by Word: He reads a book in place of to watch on TV.
- Kan vi inte prata om det i stället för att bråka?
Can't we talk about it instead of fighting?
Word by Word: Can we not talk about it in place of to argue?
- I stället för att köpa en ny telefon, reparerade hon den gamla.
Instead of buying a new phone, she repaired the old one.
Word by Word: In place of to buy a new phone, repaired she the old-one.
Notice the V2 inversion ('reparerade hon') in the main clause because the sentence starts with the 'i stället för att' phrase.
- De valde att resa med tåg i stället för att flyga.
They chose to travel by train instead of flying.
Word by Word: They chose to travel with train in place of to fly.
Common Mistakes
Using a conjugated verb instead of an infinitive after 'att'.
Jag promenerar i stället för att tar bussen.Jag promenerar i stället för att ta bussen. In the shown infinitive pattern, use ta, not finite tar. A finite clause needs its own subject, as in i stället för att jag tar bussen. The rule is not that every verb after the sequence att must be infinitive.
Omitting 'att' when contrasting two actions (verbs).
Hon lagar mat i stället för beställa pizza.Hon lagar mat i stället för att beställa pizza. The infinitive complement after i stället för needs att: i stället för att beställa pizza. A noun phrase uses no infinitive marker. An att-clause is another option with different internal word order.
