i
In
The preposition 'i' primarily means 'in' or 'inside'.
How It Works
The Swedish preposition i is one of the most fundamental words you'll learn. Its core meaning is 'in' or 'inside'. It's used in several common situations:
1. Location within a defined area:
This includes being inside a room, a building, a city, or a country.
- i ett hus (in a house)
- i Stockholm (in Stockholm)
- i Sverige (in Sweden)
2. Time:
Used for months, seasons, years, and parts of the day.
- i januari (in January)
- i sommar (in summer / this summer)
- i år (this year)
- i morgon (tomorrow). Note: This specifically means 'tomorrow'. To say 'in the morning', you use 'på morgonen'.
3. Containment:
When something is physically inside something else.
- Mjölken är i kylen. (The milk is in the fridge.)
- Nycklarna är i väskan. (The keys are in the bag.)
It's important to note that 'i' is often contrasted with the preposition på ('on'/'at'), which is used for other types of locations. The difference can sometimes be idiomatic and needs to be learned over time.
Location, Destination, And Established Phrases
I is not limited to stillness: Lägg boken i väskan puts the book into the bag, while Boken ligger i väskan describes its location. Likewise, gå i kyrkan is an established activity expression rather than simply standing inside a building.
Jag jobbar på sjukhuset is the ordinary workplace expression. Jag jobbar i sjukhuset can instead locate the work physically inside the building; it is not an impossible Swedish sentence. In Han är i ett möte, the phrase describes being engaged in a meeting; på ett möte is another familiar way to describe attendance.
Time phrases also have different meanings: i juli names a month, i år means this year, and i två timmar means for two hours. Learn each pattern rather than translating every English in with i.

Learn location phrases in context: i Stockholm, på bio, på bordet. Some places allow alternatives with different perspectives; island names do not all mechanically require på.
Level 1 - tillTo
Till names a destination, as in åka till Malmö. I can name a location or a resulting destination: bo i huset versus lägga boken i väskan. The verb and whole construction determine motion.
Level 1 - frånFrom
Från can name a source, while i often names an interior location or destination. Both prepositions also have nonspatial uses.
Level 1 - medWith
'med' (with) is another core preposition, but it is used for accompaniment or using an instrument, not for location in the way 'i' is.
