ka
The Preposition Ka
Ka commonly means “from,” “of,” “about,” or “than.” It normally belongs in the predicate phrase.
How It Works
Ka normally precedes the verb or adjective and has no gender or number agreement. Learn combinations such as ka hadal, “talk about,” and ka shaqeeyaa, “works in,” as complete patterns. Finding or learning at a place can also use source-like ka.
In Maryan waa ka dheer tahay Sahra, ka introduces the comparison standard. Dheer receives no comparative suffix. With a making predicate, ka can identify material instead.
Object i plus ka becomes iga; object ku plus ka becomes kaa. Third-person complements may remain understood because Somali lacks corresponding short third-person object pronouns. Distinguish preverbal ka from the independent placeholder pronoun ka and attached masculine article. Fixed nominal expressions also contain ka, limiting any generalization about predicate placement.
