Reading a Preverbal Cluster

Level 5

The cluster orders u before ku before ka before company la; repeated prepositions also occur.

How It Works

Somali prepositions occur in the predicate phrase and can link it to noun phrases elsewhere in the clause. Multiple prepositions merge obligatorily. The basic sequence is u, ku, ka, la, after any initial indefinite-subject la and object pronoun. Company la comes last among the prepositions. Subject agreement remains independent of the number of relations.

Combinations include u + ku → ugu, u + u → ugu, u + ka → uga and u + la → ula. Three combinations yield kaga: ku + ku, ku + ka and ka + ka. Ugu also exists as a superlative marker, so spelling alone does not determine the analysis.

In the first example, kaga links writing to both a surface and an instrument. In the second, ugu combines manner u with instrument ku. In the third, ula combines manner u with company la. Contracted elements need not refer to the same participant.

Examples (3)

  1. Hodan waxay sabuuradda kaga qortay magacyada qalin.

Hodan wrote the names on the blackboard with a pen.

Kaga combines surface ku, linked to sabuuradda, and instrument ku, linked to qalin.

  2. Waxaan si fiican ugu qoray qalinka.

I wrote well with the pen.

Ugu combines manner u with instrument ku; the written content is understood from context.

  3. Waxaan si fiican ula hadlay Hodan.

    I spoke well with Hodan.

Ula combines manner u with company la.
