ku
The Preposition Ku
Ku commonly expresses “in,” “on,” “at,” or “with a tool.” It normally occurs in the predicate phrase.
How It Works
Place ku in the preverbal cluster, after any first-position object pronoun. It does not agree with the related noun. Besides locations and tools, languages and purchase money can function as instruments.
Compare qalin ku qor, “write with a pen,” with Cali la hadal, “talk with Ali.” The pen is an instrument; Ali is a conversational partner. Particular predicates also select ku for an addressee or a suitability relation.
Distinguish preposition ku from object pronoun ku, “you.” Object i plus preposition ku becomes igu; object ku plus preposition ku becomes kugu. A contracted pronoun need not be the preposition’s semantic complement. Fixed nominal expressions have additional patterns, so preverbal placement describes the ordinary verbal construction.
