ka + comparative
Comparing Two Things
Ka + adjective expresses comparison; the ordinary copula agrees with the item described.
How It Works
Place ka before the adjective: ka dheer yahay “is taller than,” or ka dheer tahay with a feminine subject. In an ordinary descriptive statement, the copula agrees with the item described, rather than the comparison standard. Third-person short subject pronouns can be omitted in this frame.
The standard can appear elsewhere in the clause. Somali ka belongs to the predicate rather than standing immediately before the noun translated after English “than.” Name the standard when context does not identify it.
Compare dheer yahay “is tall” with ka dheer yahay “is taller than.” The adjective remains unchanged. Ka culus compares weight; ka yar can compare size or quantity. Focused-subject clauses require their own reduced predicate frame.

Tahay agrees with feminine sariirtani.
- Boorsadani waa ka culus tahay boorsadaada.
