ugu + superlative

Choosing the Most in a Group

Level 3

Ugu + adjective expresses a superlative; context identifies the comparison group.

How It Works

Place ugu before the adjective: ugu weyn “biggest,” ugu yar “smallest,” and ugu culus “heaviest.” The adjective has no separate superlative suffix. In an identifying noun predicate, the complete noun phrase follows waa without an additional present copula.

The relevant group determines the comparison. “The heaviest bag” can select one bag from those nearby; establish that group in context. Compare ka weyn “bigger than” with ugu weyn “biggest.”

The spelling ugu also represents contractions of prepositions. Interpret its function from the whole construction. The reference additionally records colloquial shortening of superlative ugu to u; that register variant should not be rejected as inherently ungrammatical.

Examples (3)

  1. Kani waa koobka ugu weyn.

    This is the biggest cup.

The relevant cups form the comparison group.

  2. Tani waa boorsada ugu culus.

    This is the heaviest bag.

    Culus supplies the weight scale.

  3. Hodan waa gabadha ugu dheer.

    Hodan is the tallest girl.

The comparison concerns the girls understood in context.
