če bi

Hypothetical Conditions

Level 3

Če bi introduces a hypothetical condition; bi can also occur in the result clause.

How It Works

Če bi introduces a hypothetical condition; bi can also occur in the result clause. Slovenian does not add an English-style would verb or conjugate bi by person.

Keep the condition and result separate: če bi imel čas sets the imagined situation; bi prišel states the consequence. Gender and number must agree independently inside each clause. A real open condition uses a different pattern such as Če imam čas, pridem.

Examples (3)

  1. Če bi imel čas, bi prišel.

If I had time, I would come.

  2. Če bi deževalo, bi ostali doma.

If it rained, we would stay at home.

  3. Če bi vedela, bi povedala.

If she knew, she would say.
