Relative Place and Direction

Level 4Sounds Like mesto gde; pravac kuda

In Serbian, place adverbs depend on movement: use где (or Ijekavian гдје) for a static place of rest, and куда (or short form куд) for direction, trajectory, or destination.

How It Works

Spatial clauses in Serbian fall into two structural types: adverbial local clauses (месне реченице), which modify a verb or a spatial demonstrative correlative in the main clause, and attributive relative clauses (односне реченице), which depend directly on an antecedent noun denoting a place, path, or direction.

1. Choosing Between Где and Куда (Scene of Action vs. Direction):
The choice between где and куда is often simplified as rest versus motion, but the actual grammatical distinction is scene of action (место вршења радње) versus directed movement, route, or destination (правац, смер или циљ кретања):

  • Use где whenever the clause defines the scene, setting, or area where an action takes place—even if the verb expresses motion! For example: Ово је парк где деца трче. (This is the park where the children run — internal movement within a bounded space) vs. Седели смо где је хлад. (We sat where there is shade).
  • Use куда whenever the clause specifies the trajectory, orientation, route, or endpoint of movement: Завршен је аутопут куда се сада брже путује. (The highway along which one now travels faster is finished — route / trajectory) / Идем куда ме ноге носе. (I go wherever my feet carry me — direction / destination).

2. Adverbial Correlative Pairs (Месне реченице):
When an adverbial local clause relates to a demonstrative correlative (суодносна реч) in the main clause, the words match in spatial orientation:

  • Location / Scene: овде / ту / онде / тамо + где
Standard Serbian features a three-way deictic system for static location: овде (near the speaker), ту (near the listener), and онде (distant from both, matching directional онамо).
Example: Остаћемо онде где смо се сместили. (We will stay over there where we settled.)
  • Destination / Direction: овамо / тамо / онамо + куда
Example: Пођимо онамо куда су сви кренули. (Let's head in that direction where everyone set off.)
Note on тамо: Unlike овде (strictly static) and овамо (strictly directional), тамо functions both as a static adverb ('there, in that distant place') and as a directional adverb ('thither / to that place'), which is why it can pair either with где (location) or куда (destination).
  • Trajectory / Path: овуда / туда / онуда + куда
Example: Иди туда куда су пробијене нове стазе. (Go along that way where new paths have been cleared.)
  • Origin / Starting Point: одатле / оданде + одакле
Example: Вратио се одакле је и дошао. (He returned to where he came from.)

3. Attributive Relative Clauses (Односне реченице):
When the clause qualifies a specific noun antecedent, the choice between где and куда is governed by the semantic role of the subordinate action, not solely by the noun itself:

  • То је онај пут где смо се срели. (That is the road where we met — static encounter on the road: где).
  • То је онај пут куда вози камион. (That is the road along which the truck drives — route / trajectory: куда).
  • То је место куда су се сви упутили. (That is the place toward which everyone headed — destination: куда).

4. The Systematic Spatial Paradigm:
The distinction between где (scene/location) and куда (direction/path) systematically mirrors the rest of the Serbian spatial adverb system:

  • Indefinite: негде (somewhere, static) vs. некуда (somewhere, directional)
  • Negative: нигде (nowhere, static) vs. никуда (nowhere, directional: Не идем никуда)
  • Universal: свагде (everywhere, static) vs. свакуда (in all directions)

5. Standard Serbian vs. Regional Forms:
In standard Croatian, a three-way distinction is maintained (gdje = location, kamo = destination, kuda = route/trajectory). In standard Serbian, камо is archaic and confined to idioms (e.g., камо среће). Contemporary standard Serbian uses куда for both trajectory and destination.

6. Generalizing with год:
Both adverbs combine with the particle год. Written separately, they form generalizing relative connectors; written as a single word, they form indefinite adverbs:
• где год = wherever (scene of action / location)
• куда год = wherever / whichever way (direction / route)
• гдегод = somewhere / here and there (indefinite adverb)
• кудагод = in some direction / somewhere along the way

Examples (6)

  1. Остаћемо тамо где смо одсели јер нам је центар града близу.

We will stay where we booked accommodation because the city center is close to us.

Word by Word: We-will-stay there where we-have stayed because to-us is center of-city close.

The clause indicates the static scene where the stay occurs, pairing the demonstrative adverb 'тамо' with 'где'.

  2. Пођимо онамо куда су сви кренули, да не бисмо залутали.

Let us head in the direction where everyone else went, so that we don't get lost.

Word by Word: Let-us-go thither where are all set-off, so not we-would get-lost.

Directed movement along a course or toward a destination with 'кренути' requires the directional correlative pair 'онамо куда'.

  3. Ово је парк где шетамо свако поподне.

This is the park where we walk every afternoon.

Word by Word: This is park where we-walk every afternoon.

Even though 'шетати' involves physical motion, 'где' is required because the action takes place within the bounded scene of the park rather than heading along a directional path.

  4. Ово је улица где живим већ десет година.

This is the street where I have been living for ten years.

Word by Word: This is street where I-live already ten years.

Attributive relative clause attached to the noun 'улица', denoting a static location of dwelling.

  5. Показао нам је правац куда треба да возимо.

He showed us the direction which we should drive in.

Word by Word: He-showed to-us is direction whither it-needs that we-drive.

The antecedent 'правац' specifies a course of directed trajectory, so the relative adverb 'куда' is used.

  6. Вратио се одакле је и дошао пошто није знао куда даље да настави.

He returned to where he had come from since he did not know where to continue to next.

Word by Word: He-returned self whence is and came since not-he-was known whither further that he-continues.

Demonstrates 'одакле' for the starting point (origin) and 'куда' for directed onward course or destination.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'где' for a destination, where 'куда' is the more careful choice.

    Идем где ме пошаљу.
    Идем куда ме пошаљу.

With verbs of movement, 'куда' marks the direction or route clearly: 'Идем куда ме пошаљу'. In everyday Serbian 'где' is also often used for a destination, so this is a matter of care and register more than a hard rule.

  • Using 'где' instead of 'одакле' for points of origin.

    Где си се вратио?
    Одакле си се вратио?

When asking or stating where someone came back from, Serbian requires the ablative spatial adverb 'одакле' (or 'откуда'), never 'где'.

  • Importing 'камо' from Western standards as the mandatory word for destination in Serbian.

    Камо си пошао на одмор?
    Куда си пошао на одмор?

While 'kamo' is strictly taught in Croatian, standard Serbian uses 'куда' for both route and destination. In Serbian, 'камо' is stylized or archaic.
