овде / ту / тамо
Here and There
Serbian uses a three-way system for location: овде (here, near me), ту (right there, near you or in this specific spot), and тамо (over there, far from both of us).
How It Works
These static adverbs of place in Serbian answer the question Где? ('Where?'). They are invariant words, meaning they never decline or change their endings.
1. Овде (Here — 1st person sphere)
Used for people or objects in the immediate physical presence of the speaker.
Example: Ја сам овде. ('I am here.')
2. Ту (There / Right there — 2nd person sphere & shared focus)
This word often trips up English speakers because it translates as both 'here' and 'there' depending on the context. Use ту when pointing out something near the listener, indicating a specific spot right on the table, or confirming presence (e.g., answering a roll call or phone call with Ту сам — 'I'm here / present').
Example: Кључеви су ту поред тебе. ('The keys are right there next to you.')
3. Тамо (Over there — 3rd person sphere)
Used when an object or location is distant from both the speaker and the listener.
Example: Парк је тамо. ('The park is over there.')
Note on demonstrative pronouns:
This three-way division functionally aligns with the demonstratives овај, тај, онај (this, that by you, that over yonder). While овде and ту match the stems of овај and тај, notice that тамо carries a т- stem rather than the он- stem of онај. Morphologically, тамо was originally a directional adverb ('thither / towards there', answering Куда?), but in modern spoken Serbian it has largely replaced the classical literary static adverb онде ('yonder / over there').
Examples (4)
- Седни овде поред мене.
Sit here next to me.
Word by Word: Sit here next to me.
Uses 'овде' because the seat is in the immediate physical space of the speaker.
- Остави књигу ту на столу.
Leave the book right there on the table.
Word by Word: Leave book there on table.
Uses 'ту' to specify a localized spot directly near the listener.
- Мој брат живи тамо, у оној белој згради.
My brother lives over there, in that white building.
Word by Word: My brother lives there, in that white building.
Uses 'тамо' because the building is distant from both people in the conversation.
- Да ли си ту?
Are you here? / Are you around?
Word by Word: Whether are-you here?
In conversational Serbian, 'ту' frequently denotes being present, available, or nearby.
Common Mistakes
Using 'тамо' instead of 'ту' for objects that are close to the listener.
Књига ти је тамо поред руке.Књига ти је ту поред руке.English speakers often translate 'there' directly as 'тамо'. However, if the object is beside the listener or right in front of them, 'ту' is required; 'тамо' sounds unnaturally distant.
Using directional 'овамо' (hither/this way) to express static location.
Ја сам овамо у соби.Ја сам овде у соби.Use 'овде' for location answering 'Где?' (Where are you?). 'Овамо' expresses movement toward the speaker answering 'Куда?' (Where to?).
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand and use the spatial adverbs 'овде', 'ту', and 'тамо', learners need to be familiar with the Serbian three-way distinction of proximity (mirroring 'ово / то / оно') and basic sentences with the verb 'to be' where these adverbs typically appear.
