Affected People in the Dative
The dative of advantage and disadvantage (датив користи и штете) uses a prepositionless dative—most often an unstressed pronoun like 'ти', 'му', or 'нам'—to express who gains or suffers from an action.
How It Works
In Serbian syntax, датив користи и штете (Latin: dativus commodi et incommodi) functions as a free dative adjunct (often analyzed in traditional Serbian grammars as a type of indirect object, индиректни / неправи објекат, and in modern syntax as an adverbial or free modifier, одредбени / слободни датив). It integrates an affected animate participant who experiences the favorable or adverse effects of an action.
1. Two Core Functions:
- Benefit / Advantage (корист): The action is performed for someone's favor, convenience, or pleasure.
Скуваћу ти чај. (I will brew you tea / brew tea for you.)
Припремио је оцу изненађење. (He prepared a surprise for his father.) - Harm / Disadvantage (штета): The action inflicts a loss, setback, or inconvenience on someone.
Киша нам је покварила излет. (The rain ruined our picnic on us.) [Pure malefactive / disadvantage]
Побегао му је воз. (The train got away on him / He missed the train.)
Неко ми је огребао ауто. (Someone scratched my car / scratched the car on me.) [Malefactive overlapping with possessive dative]
2. Clitic Pronouns & Word Order:
When personal pronouns represent the affected party, Serbian overwhelmingly favors unstressed enclitics: ми, ти, му, јој, нам, вам, им.
Full tonic forms (мени, теби, њему...) are typically reserved for contrast, focus, coordination (e.g., Купио сам сендвич теби, а не њему), and contexts requiring the reflexive pronoun in the dative case (себи, as standard Serbian lacks a dative reflexive clitic *си).
As with all enclitics, they occupy the strict second syntactic/prosodic position, following standard rules of clitic placement.
3. Distinctions and Syntactic Constraints:
- Versus за + акузатив: English speakers frequently over-translate 'for someone' into за + accusative (Отвори врата за мене). In natural Serbian, this sounds unnatural or overly transactional. Use the bare dative instead (Отвори ми врата). However, because the standard Serbian clitic cluster has only a single structural slot for dative clitics—precluding stacked or adjacent dative clitics (Немој му ми то слати)—prepositional за + accusative is legitimately used whenever the predicate already includes an obligatory recipient dative (Пошаљи му поклон за мене).
- Versus Ethical Dative: While the dative of benefit/harm expresses tangible consequences to the participant (Киша нам је покварила план), the ethical dative merely signals conversational involvement, affection, or attitude with no material gain or loss (Како си ми данас?).
- Reflexive Benefit: When the subject performs an action for their own benefit, standard Serbian requires the full reflexive pronoun себи (Купио је себи телефон; Скувао је себи кафу) even in neutral, non-contrasted sentences, never a dialectal or regional clitic *си.
Examples (5)
- Скуваћу ти чај док лежиш.
I will make you some tea while you rest.
Word by Word: I-will-make to-you tea while you-lie.
The short dative clitic 'ти' marks the listener as the beneficiary of the tea-making (dativus commodi).
- Вукови су сељацима поклали сву стоку.
Wolves slaughtered all the livestock to the peasants' detriment.
Word by Word: Wolves are to-peasants slaughtered all livestock.
The noun 'сељацима' is in the dative plural, indicating the group that suffered the loss (dativus incommodi).
- Отвори ми прозор, молим те.
Open the window for me, please.
Word by Word: Open to-me window, please you.
Natural Serbian uses the bare dative clitic 'ми' rather than a prepositional phrase like 'за мене'.
- Комшија нам је покварио све планове.
The neighbor ruined all our plans.
Word by Word: Neighbor to-us is ruined all plans.
'Нам' is the affected entity suffering the negative consequence of ruined plans.
- Купио је себи нов рачунар.
He bought himself a new computer.
Word by Word: He-bought is to-himself new computer.
Standard Serbian uses the full reflexive dative 'себи' when the subject is the beneficiary.
Common Mistakes
'За мене' is correct, but 'ми' is the neutral way to say the door is opened to me.
Different MeaningОтвори врата за мене.Отвори ми врата.'Отвори врата за мене' is fine when you mean 'for my sake' or 'instead of me'. For an ordinary request to someone to open the door for you, the dative clitic is the natural choice: 'Отвори ми врата'.
Using the full pronoun 'теби' when you do not mean to stress 'you'.
Different MeaningКупио сам теби сендвич.Купио сам ти сендвич.'Купио сам теби сендвич' is correct, but 'теби' is stressed: it means 'I bought a sandwich for YOU, not for someone else'. In a neutral statement use the unstressed clitic 'ти'.
Misplacing the dative clitic at the end of the sentence.
Отвори врата ми.Отвори ми врата.Pronominal clitics cannot sit at the end of the clause if an earlier Wackernagel second-position slot is open; 'ми' must attach right after the imperative verb.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand how the dative case marks someone who benefits or suffers harm from an action (dativus commodi / incommodi), learners need familiarity with the standard dative recipient function and the enclitic dative pronouns commonly used to express affected people.
