Вы (вежливое)
Polite Вы Agreement
In Russian, Вы (plural 'you') is used to address a single person in formal situations. While verbs always stay plural, adjectives and nouns change to match the person's actual gender.
How It Works
Russian distinguishes between informal ты and formal вы. When using вы for one person:
- Verbs: Always use the plural form, regardless of tense. For example, вы знаете (you know) or вы пришли (you arrived).
- Short-form Adjectives: These also stay plural. For example, вы правы (you are right).
- Long-form Adjectives: These agree with the actual gender of the person you are talking to. If talking to a man, use masculine singular; if a woman, use feminine singular.
- Nouns: These also stay singular to reflect the person's identity (e.g., 'You are a good doctor').
In formal writing (emails, letters), Вы is often capitalized to show extra deference, though lowercase is common in modern digital communication.
Examples (5)
- Иван Петрович, вы уже получили моё письмо?
Ivan Petrovich, have you already received my letter?
Word by Word: Ivan Petrovich, you already received my letter?
The verb 'получили' is plural, even though we are only talking to Ivan Petrovich.
- Марина, вы сегодня очень красивая.
Marina, you are very beautiful today.
Word by Word: Marina, you today very beautiful.
The long adjective 'красивая' is feminine singular because Marina is one woman.
- Вы такой добрый человек!
You are such a kind person!
Word by Word: You such kind person!
The adjective 'добрый' and noun 'человек' are singular because they describe one man.
- Будьте добры, передайте соль.
Be so kind [as to] pass the salt.
Word by Word: Be kind, pass salt.
The short adjective 'добры' and the imperative 'будьте' are plural for politeness.
- Вы очень хороший врач.
You are a very good doctor.
Word by Word: You very good doctor.
The noun 'врач' (doctor) remains singular because the subject is one person.
Common Mistakes
Using a singular verb with the polite 'вы'.
Вы пришёл вовремя.Вы пришли вовремя.Even when addressing one person, 'вы' always requires a plural verb form.
Using plural long adjectives for one person.
Анна, вы такие добрые.Анна, вы такая добрая.Using the plural 'такие добрые' makes it sound like you are talking to a group of people rather than just Anna.
Mixing 'ты' and 'вы' in the same sentence.
Вы очень добрый, спасибо тебе.Вы очень добрый, спасибо вам.Consistency is key. If you start with the formal 'вы', you must use formal pronouns like 'вам' throughout the conversation.
