вы

Plural or Polite You

Level 1Sounds Like vy

Вы (you) serves two roles: it is the plural 'you' (addressing multiple people) and the formal 'you' (addressing one person with respect). Verbs always take the plural form when used with вы.

How It Works

The pronoun вы is a cornerstone of Russian social etiquette. Understanding when to use it is essential for polite communication.

1. The Two Functions

  • Plural: Used for any group of two or more people (e.g., 'You all').
  • Formal Singular: Used for one person to maintain social distance or show respect. This is the standard for adults who are not close friends or family. Note that adults typically address children using ты.

2. Grammatical Agreement
Regardless of whether you are talking to one person or many, the verb must always be in the plural form. For example, the ending -ете or -ите is used in the present tense. In the past tense, the plural ending -ли is required.

3. Adjectives and Nouns
When addressing one person politely:

  • Nouns stay singular to match the person's identity (e.g., 'Вы учитель').
  • Long-form adjectives should be singular to match the person's gender (e.g., 'Вы добрый' or 'Вы добрая'). Using the plural form for a single person is considered archaic.
  • Short-form adjectives must be plural (e.g., 'Вы правы' - You are right).

4. Social Protocol and Names
In formal settings, вы is typically paired with the person's first name and patronymic (e.g., Иван Петрович). Moving from вы to the informal ты is a significant step. This transition, called 'перейти на ты', usually requires an explicit agreement or an invitation from the person of higher status or age.

5. Boundaries of 'ты'
While вы shows respect to people, the informal ты is used not only for friends but also when addressing God (in prayer), animals, and pets, regardless of the level of affection or importance.

6. Capitalization (Вы vs. вы)
In formal letters, emails, or official documents addressing a specific individual, you will see Вы capitalized. In all other cases, including addressing a group or in casual digital chat, it remains lowercase.

Examples (5)

  1. Иван и Анна, где вы живёте?

Ivan and Anna, where do you live?

Word by Word: Ivan and Anna, where you live?

Here 'вы' is used as a standard plural to address two people.

  2. Вы уже были в Москве?

Have you already been to Moscow?

Word by Word: You already were in Moscow?

The verb 'были' is plural, even if this question is asked politely to just one person.

  3. Скажите, пожалуйста, вы врач?

Tell me, please, are you a doctor?

Word by Word: Tell, please, you doctor?

In a formal address to one person, the noun 'врач' remains singular, but the pronoun 'вы' is used for politeness.

  4. Вы очень добры.

    You are very kind.

Word by Word: You very kind.

When using short-form adjectives with 'вы', the adjective must be plural ('добры'), even for one person.

  5. Как вас зовут?

    What is your name?

Word by Word: How you they call?

This uses the accusative form 'вас' for a formal or plural 'you'.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a singular verb with the polite 'вы'.

    Вы был в парке?
    Вы были в парке?

Even if you are talking to one man, 'вы' always requires the plural verb form 'были'.

  • Using the informal 'ты' with a teacher or stranger.

    Учитель, как ты?
    Учитель, как вы?

Using 'ты' with a superior or stranger is considered rude. Always default to 'вы' in formal settings.

  • Mixing formal greetings with informal pronouns.

    Здравствуйте, как ты?
    Здравствуйте, как вы?

The greeting 'Здравствуйте' is formal and must be paired with 'вы'. If you use 'ты', the greeting should be 'Привет'.
