-емый/-имый
Passive and Potential Participles in -емый and -имый
The present passive participle (страдательное причастие настоящего времени) describes something being acted upon right now or something that can be acted upon. It is formed from imperfective transitive verbs and ends in -емый (1st conjugation) or -имый (2nd conjugation).
How It Works
1. Formation
These participles are usually formed by adding specific suffixes to the present tense stem of imperfective verbs (perfective verbs cannot form present participles because they lack a present tense). They are primarily formed from transitive verbs, but there is an important exception for intransitive verbs that govern the instrumental case (e.g., руководить → руководимый, управлять → управляемый).
- 1st Conjugation: Add the suffix -ем- (or sometimes -ом-) plus adjective endings. A helpful trick is to take the 1st-person plural (мы) form and add -ый (Note: see Section 4 for exceptions like -авать/-знавать verbs, which use the infinitive stem). For the -ем- suffix, the stress usually matches the present tense form.
читать → мы читаем → читаемый (readable/being read); рисовать → мы рисуем → рисуемый. - 2nd Conjugation: Add the suffix -им- plus adjective endings. Use the 1st-person plural (мы) form as the base to avoid consonant mutations (present passive participles do not undergo consonant mutation). Warning: While the 'мы' form gives the correct letters, it will give you the wrong stress for verbs with mobile stress (e.g., мы любим but любимый). For stress: it falls on the stem if the verb has fixed stem stress, and on the -им- suffix for mobile or end stress.
видеть → мы видим → видимый (visible); любить → мы любим → любимый (beloved/favorite).
2. Participle vs. Adjective
In formal writing, if an agent is mentioned in the instrumental case, it acts as a true participle (a process). Without an agent, it often becomes a 'potential' adjective (a quality).
Example: проверяемые учителем работы (papers being checked by the teacher) vs. незабываемый опыт (an unforgettable experience).
3. Usage and Register
This form is common in academic, legal, and literary Russian. In daily speech, Russians usually prefer a relative clause with который or a reflexive passive. However, many specific words have become standard everyday adjectives, such as любимый (favorite) or необходимый (necessary).
4. Irregularities and Gaps
- Verbs ending in -авать, -знавать, and -ставать (like давать, узнавать, доставать) form this participle from the infinitive stem rather than the present tense stem: дава-ть → даваемый, узнава-ть → узнаваемый, достава-ть → доставаемый.
- The suffix -ом- (which always takes the stress) is used for 1st conjugation verbs ending in -ти or -чь, plus the verb искать: вести → ведомый, влечь → влекомый, искать → искомый (which is standard in modern technical and mathematical contexts).
- The word движимый (moved by / driven by) is an important exception: it is spelled with -им- even though the modern verb двигать is 1st conjugation.
- Many common verbs (пить, бить, писать, ждать) cannot form this participle.
5. Short Forms
Like adjectives, present passive participles have short forms (e.g., читаем, читаема, читаемо, читаемы) that function as predicates.
Examples (5)
- Уважаемые коллеги, добро пожаловать на конференцию.
Respected colleagues, welcome to the conference.
Word by Word: Respected colleagues, good-ly welcome to conference.
'Уважаемый' is a present passive participle of 'уважать' (to respect) that has become a standard formal address.
- Это невидимое излучение.
This is invisible radiation.
Word by Word: This [is] un-see-able radiation.
The prefix 'не-' combined with the '-имый' suffix creates the meaning of 'potentiality' (not able to be seen), formed from the imperfective verb 'видеть'.
- Данные, получаемые нами, очень важны.
The data being received by us is very important.
Word by Word: Data, being-received [by] us, [is] very important.
Here, 'получаемые' acts as a true participle, describing an ongoing process with an agent (нами) in the instrumental case.
- Мой любимый цвет — синий.
My favorite color is blue.
Word by Word: My loved color [is] blue.
'Любимый' is the present passive participle of 'любить', but it is almost always used as the adjective for 'favorite'.
- Этот файл нечитаемый.
This file is unreadable.
Word by Word: This file [is] unreadable.
Demonstrates the 'potential' meaning of the '-емый' suffix, written as a single word when acting as an adjective.
Common Mistakes
Using a perfective verb stem.
прочитаемый текстчитаемый текстPresent passive participles can only be formed from imperfective verbs. For completed actions, use the past passive participle (прочитанный).
Confusing active and passive suffixes.
Он любящий всеми учитель.любимый человек-ущий/-ащий suffixes are for the person doing the action (active), while -емый/-имый are for the person receiving the action (passive).
Using the wrong conjugation suffix.
читаимыйчитаемыйThe suffix must match the verb's conjugation. 'Читать' is 1st conjugation (мы читаем), so it takes -емый.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand present passive participles in -емый and -имый, learners must first be familiar with the present tense conjugation of verbs (specifically the first-person plural 'we' forms), as these provide the stem for the participle. Additionally, since participles function as verbal adjectives, learners need to know how to decline adjectives to match the nouns they modify. Finally, understanding transitivity (verbs that take a direct object) is essential because only transitive verbs can form these passive participles.
- Adjective agreement in oblique cases
Passive participles function as adjectives and require knowledge of how to agree their endings with nouns in gender, number, and case.
Level 2 - мы + -ем/-имPresent First-person Plural Verb
The suffixes -емый and -имый are derived from the first-person plural present tense forms of verbs from the first and second conjugations respectively.

The agent performing the action in a passive construction is placed in the instrumental case.
Level 4 - Short passive participles
Present passive participles can also have short forms (e.g., любим, уважаем), though they are less common than past short forms.
