Scalar Focus
Scalar focus particles like chiar, până și, and nici măcar function like the English 'even' or 'not even.' They highlight that the item mentioned is the most surprising or least likely example in a given context.
How It Works
Scalar focus particles are essential for adding nuance and emphasis to Romanian sentences. They signal that the focused element is at the extreme end of a scale.
1. Positive Focus: Chiar, Și, and Până și
- Și: In its scalar sense, the simple particle și can mean 'even' or 'also.' It is the most basic form of positive scalar focus.
- Chiar / Chiar și: A reinforced version of 'și.' It suggests that the inclusion of the item is noteworthy or unexpected. Chiar can also mean 'really' or 'exactly' depending on context.
- Până și: A more emphatic version, literally 'up to and including.' It highlights an unexpected inclusion; it need not assert that an entire set is complete.
2. Negative Focus: Nici măcar
- This is the standard way to say 'not even.'
- In an ordinary negative finite clause, it occurs with verbal nu, as part of negative concord. Fragments do not require an unspoken finite verb to be written out.
- It marks the lowest possible threshold that was not met (e.g., 'He didn't even look at me').
3. Syntactic Rules
- Position: These particles take scope over a focused constituent or predicate phrase. Required clitics or nu may intervene before the lexical verb; identify the whole phrase rather than enforcing adjacency to one word.
- Clitic Doubling: Focus particles do not automatically remove clitic doubling. Requirements depend on the object and construction. A personal pronoun still needs doubling, as in Chiar pe el l-am văzut.
- Invariability: These particles are indeclinable; they never change for gender, number, or case.
Examples (5)
- Chiar și el a recunoscut că a greșit.
Even he admitted that he was wrong.
Word by Word: Even also he has admitted that has erred.
Using 'chiar și' implies that he was the person least likely to admit a mistake.
- Până și copiii știu răspunsul la această întrebare.
Even the children know the answer to this question.
Word by Word: Until and children know answer-the to this question.
'Până și' emphasizes that the question is so easy that even those with the least knowledge (children) know it.
- Nici măcar nu s-a uitat la mine când a trecut pe lângă mine.
He didn't even look at me when he passed by.
Word by Word: Neither even not himself-has looked at me when has passed by me.
'Nici măcar' combined with 'nu' shows that the bare minimum of social interaction was not achieved.
- Chiar pe Maria am văzut-o la cinema, nu pe sora ei.
It was Maria herself I saw at the cinema, not her sister.
Word by Word: Precisely PE Maria I-have seen-her at cinema, not PE sister-the her.
Chiar identifies precisely Maria here; this is not necessarily scalar “even”. The fronted definite personal object is doubled by -o.
- Nu am citit nici măcar o pagină.
I haven't read even one page.
Word by Word: Not have read neither even one page.
Here, 'nici măcar' focuses on the quantity, emphasizing that the smallest possible amount was not reached.
Common Mistakes
Omitting nu in the full clause with nici măcar.
Nici măcar el a venit.Nici măcar el nu a venit. In this negative-concord construction, nici măcar is accompanied by nu on the verb.
Saying “at least” when you intend “even”.
Măcar el a venit.Chiar și el a venit. Both sentences are grammatical. Măcar gives an “at least” reading; chiar și gives the intended surprising inclusion, “even he”.
How It Connects
Learn This First
Recognize the negative environment used by nici măcar. Recognize emphatic chiar in a concessive context before comparing scalar focus.
Related Patterns
- Negative Concord
Nici măcar follows the rules of Romanian negative concord, requiring a 'nu' before the verb.
Level 4 - Focus Word Order
Scalar particles are a primary tool for managing information structure and focus in a sentence.
Level 4 - Object Clitic Doubling
Focus particles can coexist with doubling. Follow the object’s syntactic requirements instead of deleting a clitic simply because chiar is present.
Level 2 - din / de la / până laSource and Limits
Până și is etymologically related to the preposition până (until/up to), indicating a limit.
