Present Actions in Progress

Level 2

Use the ordinary present tense for an action happening now. Acum (now) is optional.

How It Works

The Romanian present tense can describe a habit or an action happening now: Citesc can mean 'I read' or 'I am reading'.

Make the time clear: Add acum (now), chiar acum (right now), or în acest moment (at this moment) when useful. These expressions are optional. Context often makes the ongoing meaning clear: Ce faci? — Scriu o scrisoare.

Word order: Acum lucrez and Lucrez acum are both possible. The position and stress can emphasize 'now'.

Use the present verb: Follow the ordinary present-tense and verb-conjugation patterns. Do not translate English 'am working' word for word as sunt lucrând. Romanian does have other constructions with gerunds, but this is not the ordinary way to describe a current action.

Examples (5)

  1. Acum mănânc, te sun mai târziu.

I am eating now, I'll call you later.

Word by Word: Now I eat, you I call more late.

The use of 'acum' clarifies that the speaker is currently in the middle of a meal.

  2. Ce faci? — Uite, citesc o carte acum.

What are you doing? — Look, I'm reading a book now.

Word by Word: What do you? — Look, I read a book now.

In response to 'Ce faci?' (What are you doing?), the present tense 'citesc' functions as a progressive.

  3. Ea doarme chiar acum, nu o trezi.

She is sleeping right now, don't wake her up.

Word by Word: She sleeps even now, not her wake.

'Chiar acum' emphasizes that the action is happening at this very moment.

  4. Acuma plecăm de la școală.

We are leaving school right now.

Word by Word: Now we leave from the school.

This uses the colloquial form 'acuma' to describe an action in progress.

  5. Lucrez la un proiect nou săptămâna aceasta.

I am working on a new project this week.

Word by Word: I work at a project new week this.

Even without 'acum', time markers like 'this week' can trigger a progressive meaning in the present tense.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'a fi' + gerund to translate 'I am doing'.

    Sunt lucrând acum.
    Lucrez acum.

English speakers often try to translate 'I am working' literally. In Romanian, you must use the simple present tense. 'Sunt lucrând' is grammatically incorrect.

Learn This First

Learn the ordinary present-tense forms to describe current actions. Context can supply the ongoing meaning; acum (now) makes it explicit but is optional. Subject pronouns can be omitted when the verb and context identify the subject.
