Counterfactual Variation
Dacă aș fi știut, aș fi venit and conversational Dacă știam, veneam can describe the same unreal past situation. Mixed patterns are also possible.
How It Works
Conditional forms
Dacă aș avea timp, aș veni describes a hypothetical situation. Dacă aș fi știut, aș fi venit describes an unreal past condition and result. Both patterns are standard in speech and writing.
Imperfects
In conversation, Dacă știam, veneam can mean “If I had known, I would have come”. Context distinguishes that from a past habitual “Whenever I knew, I came”.
Mixed patterns
Dacă știam, aș fi venit is possible. Do not impose a symmetry rule requiring the same form in both clauses. Separate the time and hypothetical status of the condition from those of the result.
Literary de
De-aș fi știut... uses conditional de in place of dacă; it is a marked or literary alternative, not a form restricted to one northern region.
Different subjunctive construction
Să fi știut, aș fi venit is another counterfactual pattern. It does not require adding dacă before să.

- Dacă aș fi avut bani, aș fi cumpărat mașina.
If I had had the money, I would have bought the car.
Word by Word: If I would be had money, I would be bought car-the.
Both clauses use the perfect conditional here. This is a common pattern, not an obligatory symmetry rule.
- Dacă aveam bani, cumpăram mașina.
If I had the money, I would have bought the car. (Colloquial)
Word by Word: If I had money, I bought car-the.
This uses the 'Double Imperfect' common in spoken Romanian. The tense remains imperfect in both parts.
- De-aș fi știut, nu aș fi mers acolo.
Had I known, I wouldn't have gone there. (Literary)
Word by Word: If-I would be known, not I would be gone there.
Uses the literary conjunction 'de' combined with the formal conditional mood.
- Dacă aș fi în locul tău, aș spune adevărul.
If I were in your place, I would tell the truth.
Word by Word: If I would be in place-the your, I would tell truth-the.
A present counterfactual using the Present Conditional.
- Dacă eram în locul tău, spuneam adevărul.
If I were you, I'd tell the truth. (Colloquial Present)
Word by Word: If I was in place-the your, I told truth-the.
The colloquial version using the imperfect to express a present hypothetical situation.
Common Mistakes
Combining dacă and să in this counterfactual pattern.
Dacă să am timp, aș veni.Dacă aș avea timp, aș veni.Use dacă + conditional for this meaning. A separate counterfactual pattern can begin with să, without dacă.
