Address and Social Register
Tu is familiar and dumneavoastră is the usual polite form. Dumneata is context-sensitive: it may convey respect, distance or condescension, rather than being a universally safe middle step.
How It Works
Romanian has several address forms. Tu and dumneavoastră provide a useful initial contrast; dumneata has context-sensitive uses rather than being a universally safe middle step.
1. Tu (Informal)
Used with family, friends, children, and peers. It uses the 2nd-person singular verb form and standard singular clitics (te, îți).
2. Dumneata (Context-Sensitive)
This form can convey respect, social distance or condescension, depending on the relationship and setting.
- Grammar: It uses 2nd-person singular verbs (like tu) but has its own Genitive/Dative form: dumitale.
- Usage: Common in rural areas or among older generations. In modern urban speech, it can sometimes feel condescending or signal an unwanted distance.
3. Dumneavoastră (Formal)
The standard polite form for professional settings, elders, and strangers.
- Grammar: It always takes 2nd-person plural verbs (e.g., sunteți), even when addressing one person.
- Adjective Agreement: Crucially, while the verb is plural, a predicative adjective is singular when addressing one person and matches that person’s gender; with several people it is plural (e.g., Dumneavoastră sunteți pregătit).
- Invariability: The form dumneavoastră does not change for case.
4. Regional Variations
In Moldavia, you may hear mata or matale as affectionate/polite forms for elders, while third-person dânsul/dânsa refer to someone being discussed. Do not learn them as ordinary second-person substitutes for dumneavoastră.

Common Mistakes
Using a singular verb with 'dumneavoastră'.
Dumneavoastră ești profesor?Dumneavoastră sunteți profesor?Even when addressing one person, 'dumneavoastră' must always take the 2nd-person plural verb form.
Pluralizing the adjective when addressing one person formally.
Dumneavoastră sunteți obosiți?Dumneavoastră sunteți obosit? If you are talking to one man, the adjective stays singular ('obosit'), even though the verb is plural ('sunteți').
Mixing informal clitics with formal pronouns.
Dumneavoastră te rog să vii.Vă rog să veniți.You cannot use the informal clitic 'te' with the formal 'dumneavoastră'. You must use 'vă'.
